The front 4 rows at the Lyttelton are usually cheap (£15)/held back for entry pass tickets due to their more uncomfortable nature: no armrests and low backs. There is also no rake in these first 4 rows and seats at the far corners have the possibility of missing some action as they are outside of the proscenium! Most of the time it's fine, though, but varies production to production. Having a sore bum after almost 8 hours of Angels in America was negated by the fact that I was 3 rows from the front I only paid £10 for the whole thing (thanks to entry pass!), so they're worth checking out if you can stand a touch of discomfort. There seems to be plenty of availability for them over the whole run.

and yes as it happens, I had a chat yesterday with a puppeteer heavily involved with the show, and yes it does sounds gorgeous and epic, with a lovely central conceit. For those who love Pinocchio do try to find on DVD Opera North's brilliant production of Jonathan Dove's score - that too had a breathtaking whale. A book could be written about whales on stage, as they probably represent the hardest thing to realise. The Royal Exchange's appearance of Moby Dick is still one of the most heart stopping illusions I have ever seen in theatre.

Do you think they'll NT Live this?

I once saw a fringe show loosely based on Moby Dick. The show itself was absolutely dire, but the five seconds in which we actually saw the whale were transcendant.

I simply can't wait for this one. I'm probably even more excited about it than 'Follies'. God help the people sat around me when the songs start.
IIIIIIIIIII've got no strings to hold me down, to make me fret or make me frown, I had strings but now I'm free, there are no strings on me . . .

I heard they want a War Horse route for this - West End, Broadway, tours and world domination?!!! I wouldn't blame Rufus at all for this. He'd be mad not to maximise its potential and he could do with another certifiable commercial hit after the flak he's had this year over the 3 Olivier productions.

I guess all of this will depend on the deal with Disney - surely it wont be as big a cash cow for the NT as War Horse, because i'd expect Disney will pocket a majority of any transfer cash? Tho even if they just get a few measly %, if its successful enough that could keep the Olivier in Mediocre productions for another few years....

Fingers crossed it’s a big fat hit. I’ve heard from friends in the NT that the puppets and whale are outstanding. Exciting. I have to wait till mid Jan

Going tonight.
Heard it's more of a play with the 4 songs than a full-blown musical.
Still should be great to see, though!

Sorry if this has already been covered - is there any new music in this? Similar to Mary Poppins or ALW's Wizard of Oz?!

Having seen what can be achieved with horses as puppets, the whale sequence really does have the potential to be quite spectacular. It would also be quite an interesting spin to have the world of Pinocchio full of puppets, where the only person who thinks he's a puppet and yearns to be a real boy, is actually a real boy the whole time. I think you'd need a few human characters like Gepetto, Coachman, Lampwick and maybe the Blue Fairy everything else could be puppets or costumes While Monstro could be amazing, I'd be interested to see how they do the donkey transfomation, that could visually amazing if utterly terrifying if done well Baz mentioned that they're not only using songs from the film but also other songs from the Disney back catalogue as well so I'm interested what songs they're also choosing for the production I remember Baz tweeting this too - but now there are only 4 songs? I wonder what happened...

Going tonight. Heard it's more of a play with the 4 songs than a full-blown musical. Still should be great to see, though! The songs in the film were written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington. "When You Wish Upon A Star" - Cliff Edwards - 3:16 "Little Wooden Head" - Christian Rub - 05:45 "Give A Little Whistle" - Cliff Edwards & Dickie Jones - 1:38 "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" - Walter Catlett - 1:40 "I've Got No Strings" - Dickie Jones and Patricia Page - 2:23 "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee (Reprise)" - Walter Catlett - 00:22 "When You Wish Upon A Star (Reprise)" - Cliff Edwards & Chorus - 01:27 Songs written for the film but not used include: "I'm A Happy Go Lucky Fellow" (also called "Jiminy Cricket")- Jiminy Cricket (Later used in the 1947 Disney film Fun and Fancy Free) "Honest John" - Chorus "As I Was Saying To The Duchess" - J. Worthington Foulfellow "Three Cheers For Anything" - Lampwick, Pinocchio, Alexander & Other Boys "Monstro The Whale" - Chorus "Turn On The Old Music Box" - Jiminy Cricket Three of these songs, however, are used in a multi-record 78-RPM 1950 cover album of the songs released by Decca Records and conducted by Victor Young.

This trailer suggests the 5 classics from the movie plus other ‘music and folk songs’
So by the Disney back catalogue we were promised, but also not just 4 songs.

Not exactly, not been much singing so far. Some pepole behind me love it, some people to my left think something is missing. Sadly I agree with the people to my left at the moment, but maybe the second half will be amazing, who knows!

Sadly I agree with the people to my left at the moment, but maybe the second half will be amazing, who knows! I definitely think it was missing something but it equally has a lot going for it. Also stylistically it jumps between feeling like something for the kids and something very akin to Cursed Child. It jumps between feeling like a play with music and a musical (the second half being far more musical). I’ve come out having enjoyed it but there’s some tightening up to do in previews, which I think will result in a stronger piece. I did feel that the whale in act two was slightly lacking from my seat in row B, so intrigued to know if others felt it wasn’t as impressive as it was clearly meant to be.

Silly question but is it more like the film or a mix of the film and the original novel? I'm curious to see how the Donkey sequence is done and Monstro too.

Also where did Chris Jarman go? I swear he was originally announced as Stromboli.
