What a career he had. When you read his credits and awards it’s perplexing he was only ever awarded an OBE.
He was principally a screen actor in recent years, I think I only saw him a couple of times on stage most notably in the 1990 NT "The Crucible".

Sad news and pretty unexpected. A fine actor mainly on films and TV, he was unlucky not to get a Best Supporting Oscar nomination for Shakespeare in Love I always felt. Also superb as Joseph Kennedy in the Kennedys mini series. Totally realistic in any part he played and a huge star for well over 25 years and a successful career going back over 40 years.
I agree his Knighthood was overdue.
