Just got back from 'An Evening with Jamie Lloyd and Jenna Russell' which was a wonderful little post-show event after Doctor Faustus (thankfully didn't have to sit through it again though).
Most interesting point of the night was a discussion about Next to Normal. Lloyd himself has been trying to get the rights for a number of years over here to do a production with Jenna but has been unsuccessful. Jenna said it was one of her dream roles to do and she sung an absolutely sublime version of I Miss the Mountains.
I wonder why it's proving so difficult to get the rights?
Speaking of dream roles, she's keen to explore more Sondheim and would love to do an Adam Guettel show - Jenna in Light in the Piazza? YES PLEASE. She also spoke briefly about her disappointment at Grey Garden's short run and how the West End is unfortunately so commercialised and that New York is doing far more interesting musical theatre.
An interesting idea, that I doubt would ever come to fruition, also came about - a Sweeney - where Mrs Lovett and Sweeney are alternated between two actors. Resulting in female Sweeneys and male Mrs Lovett's.
Alongside I Miss the Mountains, she sang her favourite Sondheim - I Remember from Evening Primrose and More Than Just My Name from the late Victoria Wood's The Day We Sang.

Was she joking about Sweeney? I can't quite imagine that. Although I'm starting to think she could literally play any musical role at all and be perfect.
I adore her and envy you a little bit that you got to go!

I love Jenna Russell to death but she can't sing either Margaret or Diana, cause she's not a soprano and Diana is too much for her belt.

Even the news on the wonderful Jenna Russell joining 'enders won't get me going back to watching it again. Gave up about 6 months ago after deciding life was too short to get depressed 3 times a week.

Fun fact*: The first episode of EastEnders is now closer to Winston Churchill being Prime Minister than it is to today.
* Fact may not actually be fun.

OK, well. I'm happy for Jenna if that what she wants to do but I'm sorry that this will keep her out of the theatre for a while. Don't watch EE but know that many people love it and a bit envious that they will be enjoying her talents rather than theatre goers.

I'm glad for her, I'm sure this will pay some bills, but hope to see her on stage where she belongs soon

A top fact from an interview with Sean O'Connor - Jenna was nearly in the original Eastenders cast as Mary the punk!

I'm really excited for her. What an all round fabulous performer and actress - and playing an iconic, high profile TV role.
And yes, a shame about Grey Gardens not transferring - she was brilliant in it.

Great concert last night. Very well put together show with Jenna talking about her career and telling some lovely stories about the various shows she has been in. She came over as a lovely genuine person. We had songs from Les Mis, Fun House, Guys and Dolls, Grey Gardens, Piaf amongst others and a nice amount of Sondheim. Also a few comedy songs which she is so good at performing. Style and Drewe were in the audience and she did a couple of their songs.
