Shut up. Cabaret at THE LIDO! I'm spending Christmas in Paris and was planning on attending the Moulin Rouge on Christmas Eve might just do this instead!

I had assumed this would be in French, a lot of English names being thrown up though so was I wrong? I think I'll go anyway!

Sam Buttery (Taboo, The Voice) as The Emcee Lizzy Connolly as Sally Oliver Dench as Cliff SALLY ANN TRIPLET as Fraulein Schneider (they get younger and younger - however she is fabulous!) Her husband, Gary Milner, playing Schultz Ciaran Owens as Herr Ludwig Charlie Martin as Fraulein Kost
The ensemble includes Poppy Tierney! Wow -she used to play principal roles!

I had assumed this would be in French, a lot of English names being thrown up though so was I wrong? I think I'll go anyway! It’s performed entirely in English. All the musicals performed at the Lido will be in English. I emailed them and asked before I bought tickets.

I saw the production on December 22nd and thoroughly enjoyed it but felt like it could have gone further. It was a very “safe” production and came across like a good amateur show where the director was a bit directionless, almost every aspect of the show was fairly vanilla.
The venue is still stunning and works perfectly for this type of show. You can get small snacks to take to your table such as caviar or macarons. It’s all very fitting for a musical set in a cabaret club but it does make you wonder how future productions will fit into the theatre. You can’t imagine Jekyll & Hyde or Mamma Mia working in the venue.
Sam Buttery as the Emcee was a wonder to witness, their genderless presentation felt like the natural next step of the mysterious Emcee and very current given today’s conversations. They really committed to the weirder aspects of the character but you never didn’t believe that they were a fully realised character working in a cabaret club in Berlin in the 30’s.
Lizzie Connolly as Sally Bowles was okay. Serviceable but very much a painted-by-numbers performance. Her Sally didn’t ever rise or fall the way the character is supposed to so when it came to her singing “Cabaret” at the end of Act Two it left us wondering what the hell she was doing. I’m not a very good writer so I can’t really explain what I mean but I thought she was all technique and no soul, if that makes sense?
Sally Ann Triplet was Sally Ann Triplet. An absolute joy to watch. Her vocals were stunning, her acting was perfection. She was paired with a very bizarre Here Schultz who I imagine was the same age as Triplet but he did a very exaggerated old man impression complete with warbling voice and very hunched back. His performance was very jarring next to Triplet’s wonderful performance.
I really enjoyed the ensemble and thought they were incredibly strong. Each person was absolutely committed and their interactions with each other, as well as the audience, made you feel like you were really in that club.
The staging was a bit off at times, for a production with seats on three sides all the action essentially played to the front which was a bit frustrating after paying €145 a ticket to see the side of the actors head.
Overall I think it was a good first production for the venue and I look forward to seeing what they do next, hopefully they’ll learn from their downfalls and the next production will be even better.

€145 for a side view? Oof! We sat in the cheap seats in an almost empty theatre. People around us asked to be upgraded and got a firm no. They decided to upgrade everyone in the balcony to the stalls 5 minutes after the show had already begun.

I've booked dead central as i didn't fancy a possible side view! If they do close the balcony I hope they do it in advance!

Fabulous. Sam Buttery, Lizzie Connelly and SallyAnn are the ultimate holy trinity.
The production wasn't allowed to use Mein herr and Maybe this time. WTF. Also, a riser is used to bring on the boarding house and the changes weren't very slick
Carson's production managed to be set in the 1930's but also the present day and its a work of genius. Very moving.

We had the telephone song - which was cute to see but I can see why it's cut.
First verse or so of sitting pretty which lead into Money - which I really liked.
The lido was a fab but a large venue for this masterpiece

I enjoyed this though it has its let-downs. Sam Buttery as the Emcee is engaging and very watchable but feels (perhaps deliberately) like they've come from a different production, one of the Mendes/Frecknall style ones where the character is sort of 'out of time' and ethereal. The rest of the show feels a lot more like a 'traditional' production of the show - the scenes in the club (other than Buttery) are played realistically, and there is a VERY realistic set for the boarding house which, sadly, doesn't work at all if you're sitting in the side floor seats. In fact, I'd strongly advise avoiding those altogether, as this is very much played to the front with massive set pieces blocking your view entirely at some moments. I had paid quite a lot to sit at one of the floor tables, luckily I was roughly in line with the front of the enormous stage but even then some of my view was cut off. The rest of the leads are functional but not enormously memorable - really quite 'cookie cutter' casting and direction. I agree that the actor playing Schultz was quite distracting with his 'playing older' schtick. Sally Ann Triplett was a great Schneider though she does also look a little young. The ensemble are probably the strongest element to this show, throwing themselves into every routine with thrusts a-plenty. It was the first time I'd seen a production not use 'Mein Herr' and 'Maybe This Time' and I did miss them - fun to see some of 'Sitting Pretty' and 'The Telephone Song' but I can see why they were jettisoned in the newer version of the show. I would love to know why these swaps have been made here. Some directorial moments are a little heavy-handed - I'm not sure we needed video projections of Hitler etc to understand the undertones of what was going on.
The venue is gorgeous but the bar prices - whew...
Overall, 3 stars from me.

I really enjoyed the show, it was great to see another interpretation. I didn't notice which songs were missing (discussed above) but did know there were changes. I'm excited to see what other shows they put on but the view wasn't great from the back row upstairs, or the row in front due to the heads of the people in the front row. it is still cabaret tables all around so room for drinks and food (I didn't look at the prices). It also seems bringing in a massive bag of crisps isn't just a UK thing! Lots of talking too, though some was from one of the 3 groups I noticed who walked out.
