I've just heard a very unfortunate rumour about why NY NY closed sooner than the planed labour day closing. Take it with a grain of salt.
Apparently Kennedy Center was desperate to follow in the footsteps of Encores and take Spamalot to the St James immediately after it closed after witnessing the success of Into The Woods so they pressured NY NY into closing sooner by leaking the fact that it was closing. It was also the same time that negative buzz around NY NY dramatically started growing not just among potential audiences but the online broadway community as well. The producers then started ramping up everything they could do to keep afloat giving away tickets (remember the free tickets for mocha offer?) and inviting theatre tiktokers and well let's just say none of that worked out.
NY Post wrote a hit-piece last month which seemed to be the final nail in the coffin (nypost.com/2023/07/10/broadways-new-york-new-york-could-close-in-weeks-sources/)
It seemed to be all too much for the producers to handle and now they're claiming there'll be touring in 2025 which I very much doubt. If a show about New York can't stick in New York, what hope do they have?
