Just heard this. 'Amadeus' was my first professional directing job (I know, lucky me!)
Such sad news.
I have a very soft spot for the now unproduce-able 'Lettice & Lovage' (bombing London landmarks portrayed as an eccentricity)

I also worked on a tour of 'Equus' and have never known so much hate mail from animal rights activists. Apparently the fact that our horses were big blokes in masks didn't make any difference...

A bit of a dark horse!
A playwright who's name is enshrined already in history, his play The Royal Hunt for the Sun was the first play to transfer from the National to Broadway and went on to write the critically acclaimed Equus that single handily saved the Shubert Theatre Group.
Although sadly he has died which he did in Ireland where he was born, he left a great legacy to theatre and I expect this to be reflected in forthcoming eulogies and obituaries.

An odd playwright. Wrote some very important works but not much else - at least that's how it feels. The Royal Hunt of the Sun is epic. RIP.
