Went to see this today at the IMAX in Leicester Square and this is one of Tom Cruise's best film in quite some time. You can tell it was a real labour of love for him and it's impressive that they made a sequel to Top Gun that is actually better than the original. The aerial sequences are just stunning and given that CGI heavy films are these days, it's impressive how much they were able to achieve it for real although I think they used a bit of CGI for some sequences but very hard to tell. Tom Cruise is great as the older Maverick but the supporting cast are strong as well especially Miles Teller and Glenn Powell but my favourite scene and I'll put in spoilers just in case is the scene with Maverick and Iceman and how emotional it was. You can tell Val Kilmer hasn't been well but honestly the fact he able to do a scene with Cruise was fantastic to watch Honestly if you want a movie that delivers on all cylinders then go see Top Gun Maverick.

The plot is baloney, the characters are all clichés, and the whole thing is almost a remake of the original. (For the first ten minutes, I feared the cinema was playing the wrong version.)
But, and it's a big but, it's a spectacular piece of old-fashioned movie-making, and quite a nostalgia trip for those of us who can remember it from first time around.
Uncle Sam here is once-again the unquestionable good guy; the unspecified foreign power wanting nuclear weapons -- hello Iran! -- is the baddie. It's an old "cowboys-and-injuns" flick transported to the sky, just as the original Star Wars was.
If you can switch off your moral compass for a couple of hours, align yourself with the heros and hate the enemy, this is a fun ride, akin to a combat computer game while riding the latest multiple-inversion, corkscrew rollercoaster.
I could. So four stars.

I saw this yesterday and thought it was amazing. I wasn't sure if it would really be my thing as I don't generally do action films and haven't even seen the original, but lots of people I know were raving over it, and I didn't have anything else on, and well... Tom Cruise! I thought worst case scenario I just quite happily watch him for 2 hours! But I did actually enjoy the film as well and was invested in the storyline. It didn't matter that I hadn't seen the original, I figured out the references easy enough. I could even be tempted by a repeat visit.

Well, it’s definitely a Top Gun film.
I laughed out loud at the sheer preposterousness of it a couple of times, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the ride.

I watched the first Top Gun today for the first time (I know, I know), in preparation for the sequel tomorrow!

You aren't meant to analyse it. It is just thinly veiled American military propaganda. Plane go zoom, bomb go boom.
I can't wait!

Had never seen the first one but get the gist that in watching the second you essentially have seen the first anyway 😂
Great fun, incredible aerial sequences that put most films to shame, Cruise is Cruise but you'd be disappointed if he wasn't. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable time in the cinema (really busy 9pm screening and everyone having a great time).
4 stars, what a great start to the week.

I enjoyed the flying sequences, which were a huge step up from the first film but everything else left me rather cold. The romantic subplot with Jennifer Connelly felt like a waste of her talents.
In an ideal world, we should have had Kelly McGillis back but this time as Maverick’s ex who is a ball-breaking lesbian colleague! Also, this one isn’t dripping in homoeroticism like the first one, sadly.

So disappointed 😆 There’s a hot beach rugby scene but the general underlying sexual tension is not there. No locker room posturing. Tom doesn’t even try to kiss Jon Hamm. As if that would happen in real life?!

To be fair, given the main relationship tension is between Goose’s son and Cruise, homoerotic tension would be kinda icky.

This movie is amazing!!!!
I wonder why they bothered to delete the Taiwanese flag from the trailer if only to include it in the final version.

Thought it was brilliant, and even better than the first.

Thr flight sequences were amazing. Apparently the scene where Ed Harris looks at the plane taking off and the roof of the building rises and falls was real. The scene could only be shoot once because it damaged the props (the roof of the building that got lifted off).

Watched this today as we were way ahead of our check-in at our hotel in Stansted ... I spent about 80% of the film grinning like an idiot. It's been made with love and looks amazing, agree it very much surpasses the original movie 🙂
