Saw the matinee yesterday; thought it was a hoot; v happy with my experience. Well-attended, too, so maybe numbers are creeping up on word of mouth?

I saw this recently, and - unfortunately - I was not a big fan. The first half was kind of funny, but then it all watered down in the second half, which felt both preachy and too "direct" (why did the characters have to say out loud everything that was already implied?). The acting was fine, but the characters didn't give the actors much to "grow" with. It also felt like it was trying too hard (to be funny?) at times.
Having also seen - and very much disliked - The 47th, and having not enjoyed "Albion" too much, I think I should just conclude that Mike Bartlett and I are not a great match.

"Having also seen - and very much disliked - The 47th, and having not enjoyed "Albion" too much, I think I should just conclude that Mike Bartlett and I are not a great match." Until seeing this, Forrest, I'd've said the same; this is the only Mike Bartlett I've ever liked or enjoyed and though I haven't seen them all since becoming disillusioned, I couldn't even sit through Charles III. Hence I never book ahead now and as with The 47th - which I am still not going to chance - the reviews were quite mixed but something struck a chord with me. Maybe it was the restoration setting; maybe after so many disappointments my expectations were low but at least this partly made up for previous experiences.

showgirl, I'm really glad that at least one of us had a good experience with this (and, unexpectedly, Bartlett!)! :)
