Cyrano is a 2021 musical romantic drama film directed by Joe Wright and with a screenplay by Erica Schmidt, based on Schmidt's 2018 stage musical of the same name, itself based on the 1897 Edmond Rostand play Cyrano de Bergerac.
Filming took place in Sicily, Italy under strict COVID protocols. Wright revealed to Vanity Fair that all the singing in the film was done live, which has become a trend with many recent musical films.
Due for release this week.
Interesting that in lieu of having a larger than normal nose as it known in the traditional story, in this case he's short of stature- a dwarf.

I didn't realise this was a version of the musical until I saw Peter Dinklage interviewed on Graham Norton, the trailer certainly didn't suggest it was a musical!

This is quite frustrating, because it looks like it might actually be a decent film, not least because of the decision to cast Dinklage and use his dwarfism in place of a prosthetic nose, and then they start singing and it's all so bland and banal that I just hate every second of it. It's based on an off-Broadway musical (in which Dinklage also starred) with tunes by an American band I think - does anyone know how it was recieved on stage?

Very mixed at best reviews for the stage production from what I recall. In fact I think the strongest notices were possibly for Jasmine Cephas Jones, who wasn't cast in the film (or didn't go in for it, not sure which). I've seen the trailer for this a couple of times before WSS. It didn't particularly make me want to see it, though general consensus is that Dinklage may well get an Oscar nomination so presumably he at least isn't terrible. |

This trailer doesn't suggest it's a musical? No not really… hahaha, I jest of course. I must have seen a TV spot or a teaser trailer as it was much shorter and didn’t have any singing. Looks interesting, thanks for posting the full trailer. |

I think they did something like that with the Johnny Depp film of Sweeney Todd too - the friend I went with was horrified to discover it wasn't a straight horror movie! |

I will definitely watch this because Joe Wright's films are so stylish. I love the fact that he is the son of the founders of the Little Angel puppet theatre (a place I visited a lot when my now adult kids were small). You can see how a childhood growing up among such creativity would make for a creative adult life.

I actually really like "Someone to Say" & reprise, but I listened to the rest of the score and I wasn't as impressed. Still, I love Cyrano and will watch it for sure.

I saw this last week and it was pretty bad. Yes it's stylish, but if Cyrano is going to be a musical shouldn't he be able to sing? Shouldn't he have the "best" songs? He doesn't. he's a terrific actor and he'd be a viable Cyrano but he's saddled with an adaptation which isn't romantic or really even musical. It's a misfire on all counts.

The Vue near Piccadilly Circus has absolutely plastered itself with posters on their windows for this which is unfortunate (did they do the premier there?) 😂
I wasn’t really paying that much attention the other night but wasn’t Peter Dinklage telling Graham Norton about finding his singing voice on Norton’s show the other night? I’m not an expert on the text, I saw the Broadway version with Kevin Kline and Jennifer Garner in 2007 but I thought a lot of the insults flung at Cyrano are about the size of his schnozzer, not sure how it would work with someone who, er, isn’t that tall to put it in a politically correct term.

I watched it a couple of weeks ago and liked it. It's not a masterpiece, but it's cute and touching. The score is okay with a couple of highlights, but it's very well acted and designed. I forgot how beautiful Noto Cathedral is. I wish they had cut the final song and kept it as a dialogue, but on the whole the movie worked for me. Peter Dinklage is not much of a singer (nor does the role require it) but he's very charming and delivered a very fine performance.

Similar to the previous poster, I saw this at one of the previews last week and enjoyed it. Like some others, I had no idea it was a musical, at least not until Roxanne bursts into song early on. The score is lovely - I'd like to see the stage version now. The film is a perfect rainy-day four-star film to lift your spirits.

So I caught this over the weekend and I really enjoyed it!
I am aware of the original story and I think some bold choices have ben made here.
Firstly replacing the concept of a large nose with that of a dwarf; inspired.
Also, whoever decided on a dwarf as a male lead. Again, an inspired choice.
I have been thinking about it and honestly can remember when a dwarf was cast as a male lead.
And singing. Some good voices. Despite never hearing any of the songs before, I actually walked out of the cinema humming one of the songs.
Peter Dinklage. I am one of the few people in the world to have not watched Game of Thrones so I'm not aware of his work or acting style.
That said he is quite a good actor. With a heavy brow, he was a determined and feisty Cyrano.
This was period piece with beautiful costumes and a brilliant locations -southern Italy and ticked all of the boxes for me.
And sometimes the song doesn't have to be sung well, rather well delivered.
Look, there are much better musicals, sure but I enjoyed this very much

I think Peter Dinklage is very very charismatic and the while the film is only okay, had they promoted it better, he could have capitalised on the early buzz and got that Oscar nomination ( especially over the hammy Javier Bardem in a worse film ).

I think my favourite part was when Glen Hansard showed up, sang a verse to show what good vocals are like, and left me annoyed he wasn’t involved in composing just because I loved Once and Cyrano’s songs were… okay.

Not a great film by any stretch but I did quite enjoy it overall. The score was a mixed bag, leaning towards the “not very good” for the most part but with a few nice songs (I really liked the trio in the trenches towards the end of the film). Style wise is was beautiful and I can see why the costumes have received an Oscar nom.
Performance wise, Dinklage was good but the standout for me was Haley Bennett.
I do wonder whether this might have worked better as a non musical, or maybe even with a more non conventional score. That said, I would be interested to see it on stage.
