The venues arr pretty close to each other Yes. But a mile apart when they open the London Bridge venue. That’s a much better location. I can think of 2-3 of these theatres that came as part of new developments that closed very rapidly (or didnt ever open). Interested to see if the Elephant venue succeeds and how they programme the separate venues. They’ve moved a few times over the years, I remember their first place, small auditorium with no front of house area at all, I forget where it was but in the same general area. After that they moved to a railway arch location near London Bridge, then to their current locations. |

The original venue was on Southwark Bridge Rd. I never went but it looks like a cute mews st.

I saw a good production of A Doll’s House there directed by Thea Sharrock who was running the place. I think Erica Whyman ran it later. |

I liked the venue, but no beer on tap. Bum!
They need to invest in some signs for which door to use in the auditorium.
The auditorium has pillars (WTF its a new venue) so I would avoid the back two rows in the central block of the stalls.

Yes, they do need signage on auditorim doors for seat numbers, though you can remember this/work it out from your seat number/the seating plan.
And yes, as for having seats with RV, presumably they couldn't help the pillars but I don't think they should even sell those seats, let alone, as currently, at the same price as those with no restriction. I certainly wouldn't book one.
As for the ghastly unisex toilets, no suprise and I've already mentioned these on a show thread.

I know a lot of people use PAYG offers at Southwark (still good value with the recent price increase I reckon) but it is also worth being on their mailing lists. Several shows recently had had promo codes emailed out, latest being £10 tickets for previews. We were interested in both The Changeling and Under The Kunde Tree, £10 moves interested to booked!

I think the Southwark Playhouse is great. I have seen some good shows at very good prices and they often seem to have special offers. "Preludes" the Rachmaninov story, where he was played by a singer/actor and a concert pianist, sounds weird but was one of the best shows I have seen in 50 years of theatre going. The SP reminds me of the Stratford East when that was really good.

I had a lovley weekend of watching In the heights (film on iplayer) and Titanic (pro shot on Skyarts). It made me long for the old days, when we had the above shows plus Dog Fight, Mincemeat, Allegro, Grey Gardens, Rink etc
The recent offerings of Ursuala and Police cops just dont cut it for me. Southwark used to be a real powerhouse and i want it back

Of course tastes vary and I appreciate that.
From my view point I enjoy many of their productions very much and have made 10 bookings this year with only one production that I didn’t enjoy. With their very frequent first night £10 tickets, first few shows of run at £15 and their £15 Voucher system it is very economical and worth taking a risk. I am definitely in the elderly category and have been encouraged to go to productions I would not normally consider. Invariably I find rich rewards.

Good example being Ben Button - booked again for the Ambassadors run. They've also had some strong stuff recently, The Bleeding Tree was well received around here. Cable Street sold out and is coming back. By the end of the year I've already booked for Julius Caesar, Foreverland and The Ungodly. |

The box office is exceptional, going out of their way to sort out any problems very efficiently and courteously. Bar staff also very pleasant even when all that is required is a glass of water. Volunteers are generally good but on occasion can be very abrupt.

I remember stuff at the same time as the above productions when they had very bad stuff as well! Its got the same hit ratio as before. Except for Cable street, which sold out very quickly, you can generally wait for reviews before getting a ticket |

I do like the SWP as a venue with very reasonable prices. The PAYG scheme has been terrific value to allow me to see shows really cheaply and to take a punt on stuff that i would not of booked for.
I think the new site is excellent and a welcome addition to the area. The Tuesday matinees are also very useful to book shows when I’m on a theatre holiday.

Can I appreciate both points in that the tickets are very good especially the PAYFG, but there artistic standards aren’t as good as once, when they did a lot of revivals.

Feels like they're getting more shows transferring these days to be fair. Don't get me wrong, I loved their revivals. However, they've had Mincemeat and Benji Butts and undoubtedly Cable Street will eventually go West End as well. That's pretty good and since Covid as well. I mean look at the Menier; it's increasingly feeling out of touch as a venue by not evolving or getting decent new work in. |
