Well, I went to see this and enjoyed the bits I saw, but it failed the 'keep me awake' test so I missed at least half an hour toward the end. {Spoiler - click to view}
I know this was Daniel Craig's last Bond, but I'd like them to keep the supporting cast, with the exception of Nomi, since aside from a couple of fun bits of dialogue I didn't see why she was there. Maybe she was essential in the bit I missed. It didn't occur to me at the time that Moneypenny could have taken the 007 designation but now it's been mentioned, I'd have really liked that and the fun dialogue would have been mostly intact.

I’m not sure what to think about this one to be honest. It’s enjoyable and it didn’t feel like 163 minutes, but I just don’t know if it works as a James Bond film. What does it actually add to the storyline thread that has existed since Casino Royale? Nothing, despite trying to, and therein lies the problem for me. But I’m open to a female Jamie Bond era next. {Spoiler - click to view}They just killed off James Bond so they might as well go full hog and give it a go across a trilogy of movies, before rebooting it again with a male lead in time for the 70th in 2032. But I suspect whoever will become the next lead will be announced next year as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations.
No way, James Bond was a double agent working for the Russians all along? |

I think that the spoiler tag added to the @kevinuk post needs to be extended to include the text from “I also don’t know…” onwards. The post from christya could do with a spoiler there too. Oh you must go... Here are my more detailed (plot spoiler free) thoughts, although I do touch on recurring characters, but all are as billed.

Second visit this afternoon to No Time to Die. In the meantime, I had rewatched the Craig era in order.
Still 5* from me, and today was with a more critical hat on. Spectre and QoS I had only seen once apiece, unlike Casino Royale and Skyfall which I have probably now seen dozens of times. It just feels like an epic and meant for the big screen. I think it will lose a lot without the cinema audio/visual experience, unless you have a very fancy set up.
I didn't really pick up on anything I missed, but having things like Mr White's relevance to the overall plot and Bond's relationships with Vesper Lynd and Felix Leiter fresh in my mind - and their arcs comprehensively covered with some retcons which genuinely work - gave the rewatch experience extra interest for me. It gives fanservice while making the story arc thoroughly complete.
And that is what the movie is - thorough. It works on its own, but the threads through it are there to be enjoyed off the back of the other movies in the Craig era. They are the sprinkles on the ice cream, which make a perfectly great stand alone movie that bit more special.
The length wasn't a problem for me at all. There are no do-overs for the closing of this Bond universe, they had to get everything packed away. And I feel the writers and director did it beautifully.
My one criticism? While not bad, Rami Malek still feels like he is just doing his Elliot from Mr Robot again, but with an accent and make up. The same big wide-eyed stare, the same slightly gormless broody pout and effeminate lisp... If you could swap out Javier Bardem's character and performance as Silva, you'd have one of the great action movies of all time. As it is, it's one of the best action movies in years and easily of the best Bond films.

I believe Rami Malek’s said he actually based the character on Freddie Mercury (possibly just the haircut and the voice). I don’t know, maybe he was joking, but the comment kept popping back into my head.
I think Freddie would have preferred to have been a Bond villain with a bit more gusto, though - wasn’t terribly impressed with Malek’s turn.
Overall I enjoyed the film a lot, though - very tense, particularly the chase scenes. It felt very much like a spy movie instead of just being an action movie.

Also, I have to say what a dreadful theme song that Billy Eilish effort is. I’d forgotten about it given the delay in releasing the film but my god it’s bad. We’ve had a couple of duds in the canon of bond themes (Madonna I’m looking at you) but this has to be the all time worst. Who on earth thought some miserable, mumbling 17 year old was suitable to carry the iconic title sequence of what is quite an important Bond film was very misguided.

It so wants to be OHMSS its painful - stealing vast swathes of the plot and some musical cues, sadly its more Octopussy. They've made a film about family - Bond/Swann, Bond/Blofeld, Swann/Lucifer Satan (or whatever they called him in an attempt to hark at those names), Bond/M/Q/Moneypenny, Bond/Felix, Bond/SPOILER etc but its all undermined by still having him moping about after Vesper in the PCS. Yes he's saying goodbye and moving on but its a plot beat we don't need and it reminds us that there was a more believable relationship 15 years ago and if he isn't over it then why should we care about the here and now also FFS what kind of man takes his new girlfriend on holiday to the place where his ex is buried? That's a massive red flag for any relationship!! For all the hype of "we've got a female OO7" after the scenes in Cuba she becomes irrationally jealous of Bond maybe getting OO7 back and then they literally sail her off into the sunset 20 minutes before the end just so we can have the traditional Bond v Villain showdown. And how on earth is James Bond Jr seemingly a surprise to everyone that Swann works with? It ends on the greatest line in cinema history leading into the best Bond song of all time but it just seems to be a massive missed opportunity. It just doesnt hang together as a decent film - we've not got enough of the baddie to make him menacing and the Blofeld scene stops the film dead. All that money on the budget and poor old Blofeld still gets a laughably bad makeup job. |

I watched this last night - whilst I enjoyed it and thought it was a very well made film, it didn’t have the same sense of fun as previous Bond films. I was disappointed by the theme song, this one definitely won’t be listed as one of the classics in years to come. A few humorous moments (mostly involving Q - very well played by Ben Whishaw). Overall a 3.5⭐️ film for me. Daniel Craig’s peak was definitely Skyfall.

My boss (who is frankly a bit of an idiot and very incompetent) told me the ending of this…..and cheerfully added “but i don’t suppose you want to see it” !!!!!!
I thought a bit mediocre compared to the recent ones. But nice enough for a bit of Christmas Day fluff

After finally seeing it, I believe it ended with We Have a All the Time in the World from On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
I thought it was a very poor film. It just felt flat and lifeless in almost every way - the characters were dull and had zero chemistry, the plot was incoherent and lacked drama, and the Lucifer villain was unthreatening and his plan didn't seem to make any sense. Even the action was mostly bland and uninspiring. It reminded me very much of Spectre.
I didn't really expect them to reach the heights of Daniel Craig's best in Casino Royale or even Skyfall, but the troubled production history, multiple rewrites and director changes shows a lot more than I hoped.
There were some nice touches (I think Cary Fukunaga is fantastic and I reckon would have made a great film had he been at the writer/director helm from the start) but for me this was an extremely disappointing way to end a Bond run that started so brilliantly.

The film doesn't end on that* - it ends on the greatest Bond song of all time. As I said it so wants to be OHMSS its painful.
* - at the Bond, James Bond line and then as the Aston drives into the tunnel where its framed as if its the opening gunbarrel. NTTD may also be over the end credits but its such a forgettable number I cant recall.

Technically he was as they dumped the previous script when Boyle left. According to Fukunaga Boyle wanted to make a Roger Moore style Bond film but that's not what the producers wanted. |
