I see Jonathan Pryce has been knighted. Not sure about that, he wouldn’t have been right at the top of my list. I suppose Game of Thrones didn’t do his chances any harm.

I've never seen Game of Thrones and don't watch much tv, so I assumed he'd just been out of work/retired for the few 5 years or so since he played Shylock at the Globe. I like him, but not sure I can comment on what kind of career merits a knighthood (and I like to think my favourite un-honoured actors have all turned them down).

Yes I suppose a few of the more obvious candidates have turned it down (or would do so). Jeremy Irons for example. Michael Sheen obviously who ungraciously “returned” a lesser honour he’d previously accepted. Purely in the theatre world Michael Pennington is the most deserving.

I mean Jonathan Pryce got an Oscar nod last year, he's not exactly dwelling in obscurity. And he's also a two times Tony and Laurence Olivier Award winner. There are bigger names for sure, but I wouldn't say his career is inferior to SRB, especially on an international level.

I see he's got the plum Prince Philip role for the next series of The Crown - a TV series like Game of Thrones that I've never seen so I'm only really aware of his theatre work. I assume Juliet Stephenson must have turned down a Damehood. Vanessa Redgrave (obviously). Brenda Blethyn.

Juliet Stevenson has a CBE (according to Wikipedia), but, yes, it's hard to believe she hasn't been offered a damehood. In reference to the RSC thread, I'd guess Alun Armstrong and Adrian Noble must have been offered honours and turned them down.

Yes, I hope RA has had the opportunity to turn something down! There's a Wikipedia page on declined honours. None of these names are listed, but I imagine only a small number of rejections are publicly known. There are quite a few theatre people on there - Alan Bennett, Jez Butterworth, Jim Broadbent, Glenda Jackson, Caryl Churchill and others. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_have_declined_a_British_honour

I think it's known that he turned down a CBE. Maybe we'll find out more when his diaries are published. There are reports online of a campaign to get him a posthumous knighthood, which seems a bit tone-deaf if he wasn't a fan of the honours system (or perhaps he turned the CBE down for another reason).

Oh did he keep diaries ? Those could be good.
Paul Scofield accepted a CBE, turned down a knighthood, then accepted the higher Companion of Honour award. I’m surprised McKellen isn’t a Lord (like Olivier).
