Started to watch the new Netflix mini-series Halston last night and really enjoying it so far.
Ewen McGregor plays Halston and is excellent.
Added bonus for any Liza Minnelli fans as, quite rightly, she features heavily in the series (not the real Liza obviously). The actress playing her does a good job without doing an impersonation of her and, as an added bonus, you have a few of Liza's iconic songs too.
Anyone else watching it?

Thanks for the heads up I ♥️ Ewen & Liza. What a jackpot?! Also, I really struggle to find anything on Netflix that isn't a repeat of a British sitcom

There's also a documentary about him on Amazon Prime. Perhaps I'll watch it after watching the series as there's suppose to be some "artistic differences" in the series. In fact Halston's family has disowned it.It's just nice to see a Ryan Murphy series without any throat cutting - so far! Thanks for the info - I will check that out when I have finished the series. Yes I read something yesterday to say that the family didnt want to be associated with it.

Nice bite size episodes about 45 mins long which I like - watched 3 last night.

Three episodes in and I can see why his family didn’t approve. He’s portrayed as a bit of a nightmare with a liking for coke and men with very large... ahem... personalities. It’s very enjoyable though and Liza is fab. Why haven’t we had a trashy unauthorised biopic of Liza yet?

Yes, I’ve watched one episode so far. I knew nothing about this person, not even his name so am learning...of course I love the visuals but I’m thinking the pace is a bit awry.

The visuals are stunning but I agree the pacing is all over the place. Whether it was true or not, the extent of narcicsm that is being shown is rather off-putting and makes the lead character wholly unlikeable and unsympathetic.
The woman playing Liza is great, but other than that this pales in comparison with the likes of Fosse/Verdon.

I’m all for a limited series though. Sometimes I look at stuff abd see there are 12 episodes or even worse more than one season and I just can’t summon up the enthusiasm for it.

Limited series are the best. A story with a beginning and end. Not some endless multi season mess that gets worse and worse each year before being scrapped.

I'm trying to watch this but Ewan McGregor seems totally miscast. It's like he's forgotten how to act, it's so hammy, almost like bad Am Dram. And he's way too old - in 1968 Halston was 36, Ewan has just turned 50!
Krysta Rodriguez is fabulous as Liza though, loved her since the Smash days.

I saw a couple of Halston adverts on YouTube featuring Halston and Ewen McGregor sounds just like him so I would say that's good acting. Also I wish I'd looked as good as Ewen at 50.

He does look good for 50 but that's irrelevant if he's supposed to be 36!
I'll stick with it but at the moment it just feels like he's overacting, nothing in his line delivery feels natural at all. Sounding like someone doesn't mean you can portray them convincingly.

Watched first 3 eps last night, enjoying very much, I didn't know anything about Halston before this, so I'm interested to see where it goes. Agree with the limited series views too (mini-series in my day!). They were huge back in the 80s and big TV events....I'm thinking of 'The Thorn Birds', 'Return to Eden', 'Lace', and 'V' etc. These days, if something is popular they seem to drag it on till the death. 'Pose' would have worked better as a mini-series perhaps and maybe we didn't need the 2nd series of 'Smash'.

I finished it last night, Ewan did seem to settle into it as it progressed and became more convincing as Halston got older. Krysta remained the standout for me though.
An averagely OK watch, nothing to blow you away and I wouldn't watch it twice. Some lovely performances from Vera Farmiga and Kelly Bishop. Long live Emily Gilmore 😍

Just watched the doc on Prime. Excellent! Very much the business story as opposed to the rather raucous personal story on Netflix. Just as glamourous though, lots of models and celebs including Liza. Recommended.

Limited series are the best. A story with a beginning and end. Not some endless multi season mess that gets worse and worse each year before being scrapped. British tv used to be great for this... instead of a full series/season of 13 episodes, the story got however many episodes it needed. And instead of a second series/season, if the story was over, the series was over. I think this is still more prevalent in the UK than the US, which tends to beat the horse until it comes back as a zombie.

Watched a couple of episodes last night - in the second another character points out that Halstrom’s speech and mannerisms are affected, so I think it’s totally deliberate! It’s not meant to feel natural.

I've watched some interviews with Halston and I see what you mean, but I still think Ewan overdid did it, it felt quite cringeworthy at times. Less so in the later episodes, maybe I'd just gotten used to it by then.
