I went in not knowing whether I’d come out loving or hating this. Thankfully it was the former, and I thought it was really excellent. The score is great - can’t wait to give it another listen. The performers all excellent. Bit of drama at the matinee today, stopped half an hour in and Jaquel Spivey was replaced by Kyle Ramar Freeman (both were great, if anything Kyle having a better singing voice).
About an 3/4 in the tone shifts and it became a bit more challenging but then there’s a sort of reveal and I understood why it happened. So much going on - I’m definitely going to need a return visit on a future trip.
I don’t see this coming to the U.K. but I definitely recommend catching it in New York - word of mouth is certainly picking up and it seems to be doing well off the back of the TONY noms, and I’m sure it will win a fair few (including best musical)

There are just not enough superlatives I can think of to describe this show.
The script is clever, insightful and at times both very funny and incredibly touching. The music is sublime and what seven performers can achieve with their perfectly blended vocals is off the scale. The cast are incredible, playing multiple parts within the troubled mind of Usher, the main protagonist in the show ( played with enormous heart and soul by young actor Jaqueline Spivey).
The show grabbed me firmly with its electric energy from the very start and put me back down in a mind blown mix of elation and emotion at the end
I have never seen anything quite like it or been part of a wonderfully diverse audience who were on their feet immediately as the last note was sung.
I saw it twice while I was in NY. Once just wouldn’t have been enough to take it all in.
Goodness knows how long it’ll last on Broadway given that it’s most definitely not a show for tourist per se ( in the way something like Phantom or Wicked might be) but if anyone here on the board is planning a trip to NY, book now. This is a landmark show that should be seen and enjoyed by as many theatre goers as possible. In short, it’s a modern masterpiece ( in my humble opinion)..

Sadly, closing Jan 15 after just 314 performances.
I thought it was sensational.

I had a very strong feeling that ASL was going to have a short run on Broadway. It was never going to be one for the tourists and Broadway shows are pretty much unsustainable in that case.
I’m hoping it may have an on-going life elsewhere, maybe move back to an Off-Broadway house like Avenue Q did when the Broadway run ended. I can’t see a tour happening of anywhere other than certain major cities,
In my opinion, it’s way too good to be mothballed.
I’m just so pleased for the cast and creative team that the production made it to Broadway and won so many awards along the way.
I feel very privileged to have had the chance to see it twice when I was in NY. It’s certainly a show I’m unlikely to ever forget.
