So TallPaul just casually dropped out in the word game thread that this was happening. No idea when he was going to get around sticking a thread up for it, I know he’s hugely busy in lockdown doing, erm... whatever he does in lockdown, planning new ways to acquire capes probably 😑. Anyway, back to its origins. I saw this at the Crucible in *cough* 1978. They let me in despite being in short trousers and sucking a dummy. It was very good, starring VW herself and Julie Walters. whether it happens this summer or not it’s fab to see its in the Crucible’s agenda for sometime soon. www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/events/talent

Blimey, BurlyBeaR! You're much older than I think any of us imagined. I was actually going to start a thread this afternoon, after I'd finished pressing (on a low heat, obvs) that silk shirt you very kindly gifted me for the Jamie shoot last summer. We'll probably know if there has been a further change of plans in the coming weeks, but Talent was a late replacement for the previously announced Oscar and the Pink Lady, which is still in development. I have no inside knowledge (though I sometimes stalk Bob Hastie in the M&S foodhall) but I suspect that without the sudden need to fill a gap, this was going to be part of the world-famous Crucible Theatre's 50th anniversary season in 2021. If I'm honest, that does seem like a more appropriate and celebratory place for it, but for now, tickets remain very much on sale.

I remember seeing VW’s Good Fun too, I think it was commissioned after the success of Talent. It starred Julie W as a character who was a make up sales woman on a beauty counter who wore a pink suit, and that was the genesis of the character Dotty in the future tv series.

The Menier also did a production of Talent which was directed by Victoria Wood herself. As a massive fan of hers I so wanted to meet her and say hello. Asked the stage manager if she was ok about meeting people and was told it was fine as long as I did it after the performance. So finally met her and, of course, I just talked gibberish as I was very nervous. She was quite shy but signed my poster which has pride of place in my hall. One afternoon into the run she turned up with Julie Walters to watch it. They had just been to the BBC to film a special. It was brilliant to see them sitting there watching the play and knowing that they were the original 2 actors.

I hadn't expected to "stage door" but she literally bounded out ("Where are your autograph books?") and kindly signed my ticket as I had nothing else for her to sign (I have since obtained 2 signed photos). It was just after the first series of "As Seen on TV" had aired. I asked her if the BBC had plans to repeat it. "The BBC repeat everything they get" was her response.

I saw her at one of the early MIF performances of That Day They Sang. She crept into a stalls seat just before curtain up, there was a small ripple which she quelled by flapping her hands in a downward direction. She moved into a box at the interval, notepad and pen in hand.

Just been watching the documentary "Victoria Wood: In Her Own Words". A tragic loss to the world of comedy. A fantastic writer and performer whose work for me is still funny and hits the mark every time even after 30 or so years of it being aired on TV. I'm glad the Crucible Theatre (sorry TallPaul, World-Famous Crucible) have rescheduled this production and I'm certainly taking a trip over the Pennines to God's Own Country to see this.

It was in that very room with a view, BurlyBeaR, that Chris Bush, the playwright, told me all about Standing at the Sky's Edge, the play wot she wrote. Sadly, the greenhouse behind has just been ruined. Its new doors have been procured in a typically municipal way, by local government officers with no understanding of aesthetics. 😡

alece10, as requested - A really nice day out to a very sunny Sheffield today to watch this. Running at 90 minutes straight through, Victoria Wood’s first play really was a fun watch. Being her 1st play, you could see her skill at both at writing and composing satirical songs that would be refined in later years to bring us such classics as Acorn Antiques and Dinner Ladies as well as the legendary Barry and Frieda song. The set itself designed by Janet Bird is basic with a a few boxes, tables and chairs dotted around the stage. Musical accompaniment is provided by a single white piano high above the stage. Lucie Shorthouse as Julie and Jamie-Rose Monk as her friend Maureen I felt worked well together and really got a lot of laughs from Victoria’s script and the musical numbers which worked really well and got plenty of laughs from the audience this afternoon. What was interesting was how the play ended. I think a few patrons, myself included thought it ended abruptly and started applauding but then suddenly we got one final song. No issues with the preshow COVID stuff. Getting in and out of the theatre was hassle free and like all SD performances, there was plenty of room to spread out.
