The Bristol Old Vic 2020.
June: Mark Rylance in Semmelweis, co-produced with Sonia Friedman, National Theatre and Shakespeare Road. Based on the life of a radical member of the medical profession, the show is based on an idea by Rylance and written by Stephen Brown, all in collaboration with the venue's artistic director Tom Morris.
September: Gatsby, co-produced with Northern Stage, English Touring Theatre, Royal & Derngate, Northampton, Oxford Playhouse, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and Birmingham Rep. Adapted by Maria Aberg and Joel Horwood.
October: Sally Cookson will direct Wonder Boy alongside Bristol-based writer Ross Willis along with the return of A Monster Calls.
Christmas: Miranda Cromwell (Death of a Salesman) will direct The Little Mermaid
The Wardrobe Ensemble will present hit show The Last of The Pelican Daughters (co-produced with Complicité and Royal & Derngate, Northampton),
Kneehigh will perform karaoke satire Ubu! A Singalong Satire after its run at Shoreditch Town Hall.

Since the National Theatre is a co-producer, does it mean that Semmelweiss will transfer to the National?

Sonia Friedman’s involvement would indicate at least a commercial transfer, could be parachuted into the National for a short run before its’s West End arrival.

What an awful line up! Is the BOV going to be another regional theatre that has spent millions on a rebuild and then puts nothing on worth seeing?

Just back from a very disappointing Cyrano de Bergerac at the Bristol Old Vic this evening. Tom Morris direction, the usually excellent Tristan Sturrock as the lead. No charm or panache in my view. A rare misfire from Morris.

Cyrano is an almost impossible play to get right. I think the only time I have enjoyed it was when I saw the Depardieu film (which I know wasn't the play - but at least it was largely the original text)
I know why actors are attracted to the title role - but audiences only seem to react when it is a really big name playing it.
It is one of those plays that is better in theory than it is in reality. It should be thrilling, romantic and tragic. It is frequently overlong and dull.

I think the only time I have enjoyed it was when I saw the Depardieu film (which I know wasn't the play - but at least it was largely the original text) I know why actors are attracted to the title role - but audiences only seem to react when it is a really big name playing it. It is one of those plays that is better in theory than it is in reality. It should be thrilling, romantic and tragic. It is frequently overlong and dull. I agree, but the Terry Hands/Derek Jacobi production has some very fine moments.

I agree, but the Terry Hands/Derek Jacobi production has some very fine moments. Moments. Indeed the play always has moments. Just not enough and too far apart!

Cyrano is a dreadful play. First of all it asks the actor to don a false nose. They have tried ‘normal’ noses but it doesn’t work. And these days we aren’t bothered by a nose are we? Then, the actual story is just a one trick pony, one joke. then the ending is very poor.

Quite brilliant - even a bad play can be rescued.
