Derren is a brilliant magician, but I wish he wouldn't pander to notions that he's reading body language or minds. He's not.

I saw him live once, never felt the need to see him live since, and deduced that it was a combination of audience plants and very perceptive body language reading. No?

It's neither. It's not the only technique, but the most common method to find out things from audience members is to actually solicit them in advance by filling in cards. Quite why people are so amazed to have stuff they've already disclosed "revealed" , I don't know.

I do think that might be a technique used by psychics or mediums but not for an act like DB.

Rest assured there's always a trick to even the most remarkable of feats. Part of the fun, for me, is trying to work it out.
One of the interesting things I read from Brown was that he's personally not convinced that hypnosis is real, despite the fact he can do it. If I understood correctly, the idea is that for some people it just taps into an innate desire to just go along with what people want. That doesn't really explain how people can claim to have no recollection of what they did under hypnosis.

Saw this with a friend yesterday. One of the worst things I have ever seen in a theatre (my friend didn't like it either). Completely pointless, he talks and talks and talks and nothing much happens. Not many tricks and nothing you haven't seen before. He can deny it all he wants but there are obviously actors hired (there is a video played at the end that had to be recorded beforehand). I cannot understand the five star reviews and how it can be sold out for the whole run (it would be interesting to know how many seats the actors take every show). There is also some supposedly emotional component, I couldn't care less.
Complete rubbish.

There is also some supposedly emotional component, I couldn't care less. Complete rubbish. None of the people who go up on stage are actors. Having worked the majority of Derren's shows, the audience is always stooge-free, and the people are usually selected completely at random through the use of frisbees thrown out into the auditorium. He does, however, use his own crew as 'ushers' to help with certain parts of the show. {Spoiler - click to view} The video at the end is actually recorded in the interval. After the end of the hypnosis section the people who were up on the stage are sent back to their seats, but asked to wait at the bottom of the treads so that his team can ensure they're fully 'back to normal'. Once the interval starts the 4 people are taken through a side door, the first three are checked and sent back to their seats, while the 4th (who'll be brought back on stage again in act 2) is led onto the stage and the video of them moving the chair and standing on it is recorded. Footage is recorded in act 2 of the independent witness standing in front of the box, which is then edited with the video made during the interval.

Duration of blackout and duration of video do not even match. It is obviously not filmed in real time so the trick itself is completely pointless. I should also point that the majority if the audience seemed to loved the show, so maybe it is me not getting it.

I've not seen Showman, but I've read the detailed synopsis of an earlier iteration over at the magicians' forum: www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=735135That suggests that the mismatched duration is the whole point. The audience is meant to question their perception of what really happened. Of course, it's hokum, but isn't all theatre?

Even if something is not real it should be believable...

Excited to see this on Sunday. Someone recommended his 'Book of Secrets' working well as post-show reading and a companion piece.
Just wondering, is there any mercy for sale? Maybe a cool poster?

I do wonder how the 'forgetting part of the show' trick will be translated to film/if it will be showed at all!

Oh, excellent. If they're showing it on telly then I can probably talk about the bit I was in. I mean, not on here because if you all care you can see the bit at the end when it's on telly, but with my theatre-loving friends some of them knew I was at the theatre and wanted to know what I'd been doing and I'd signed a bloody NDA! And then others turned up in the audience...awkward.

The choir at the end. Not the one that was on Channel 4, we must have been a different stop on the tour. Our lead singer was WAY better though - we had a lady called Michelle John who was apparently on The Voice.
