The great man's next project. I've just bought tickets for my first Epidaurus experience in July - and it happened to be this. He's involved in rather a lot at the moment (a Janacek song cycle, The One Who Disappeared, at Covent Garden soon, if I remember rightly, though that's over from Holland). I hope he's not spreading himself too thin. Though I notice the Broadway West Side Story isn't opening till December.

Electra/Oreste is also showing on 26 June - the night after Les Damnés finishes at the Barbican - at the cinema in the Institut français in London. It comes with an an introduction by actor Christophe Montenez. I saw a screening of the Comédie-Française Misanthrope there earlier this season - superb, granite-hard, vicious. This also came with an intro by the director (and actor) Clément Hervieu-Léger which was illuminating. It wasn't just chat. They got a professor in to do the questions and everything he said was translated. The only problem was that it finished very late: 23.00. www.institut-francais.org.uk/cine-lumiere/whats-on/special-screenings/electre-oreste

Saw this at Epidaurus last night and thought it superb. Simple staging, lots of mud, a squat dark building at the back of the stage which serves as the places where the killing gets done. Really elemental stuff, superb fill-the-auditorium acting (miked), wild dancing, lots of timpani. This is the Van Hove I love - no tricks, just intense performances a la View from a Bridge. The ad for the Comedie Francaise TV showing online gives a good impression.
As for the Epidaurus experience, I thoroughly recommend it. I booked online early but the theatre was only two thirds full so you might be able to turn up and get tickets on the day. We paid 35 Euros and we’re perfectly happy with seats, to the side two thirds of the way back. Relaxed atmosphere, food outlets to suit all pockets. We ate after the show on the site at an affordable restaurant.
