Nothing lasts long on Broadway, except for a couple of shows.
Maybe one of many, a delayed reaction to nothing much closing January this year.
Could be that Spongebob is going in there, been some good reports of that from its workshop.

Haha Oh go on then, I'll let you off How wonderful that a British MT import has enjoyed a happy 4 years on Broadway, without a major Tony Awards sweep. Would've LOVED to have seen Chris Sieber as Trunchbull, though. Well, I'd love to see Chris Sieber in anything. Think he's absolutely fab.

Isn't it funny how both the Roald Dahl musicals (Charlie and Matilda) are closing the same week, if Charlie does close on January 7, 2017 of course. And also funny that they both opened around the same time, in both April and June of 2013...

"Broadway.com customers with tickets to cancelled performances will be contacted with information on refunds or exchanges."
How odd. I would have thought they'd close the show at the end of the current booking period rather than cancel performances. Or does Broadway work differently to the West End?
But still, it's had a very good run on Broadway considering Dahl isn't as popular in the US, and I'm sure the current US tour will still be going strong. I imagine it will run much longer in London, at least to around it's 10th birthday.

I'm guessing they put that at the end of every announcement of closure for a show just to please everybody, so they can't get sued.

I wonder if Charlie might be going into the Shubert? They've not announced a theatre yet, SpongeBob is another possibility too or Miss Saigon.
An almost 4 year run is very good, I guess like Billy Elliot, the running costs were high and they've not been doing too well in the non holiday period.

Shows do cut their booking period over here, Billy Elliot for example was booking until December 2016 then cut it by eight months when they announced they were closing.

Meaning that the only survivor of that 2013 Season on Broadway now will be Kinky Boots with the closure of Matilda!

I should think if any of my friends who work on Matilda were to read this title, they'd be very worried that they might be about to become unemployed.
People's lives y'know!

Possibly but I think given it's opening at the Old Vic, they'll go for a similar sized Broadway theatre like the Broadhurst or August Wilson There's an article on Deadline which says that Matilda has only made 5% above its capitalization costs to investors, it's already recouped but I suspect the high running costs mean it has made not much profit and just meeting running costs isn't good in the long run. deadline.com/2016/04/broadway-matilda-sets-closing-after-little-profit-to-investors-1201737997/

I seem to recall stories at the time about the RSC being very strict on the return investors would get, because they wanted to avoid a Les Mis situation where the investors made more out of it than they did.

Just back from seeing Matilda in London tonight. What a load of sh*te. The only part I enjoyed was the little girl being swung by her hair. Oh how I wished it was me being swung out of the theatre by the little hair I have left. The story was fine, but the music and choreography was not to my liking at all. Glad I have seen it though so I now know what I was missing.

It has one great song and the rest are very forgettable.
I liked it at the time but its faded from my memory far quicker than other shows I saw at the same time - so enjoyable enough in the moment but not something I could ever see myself going back to.

I think it's overwhelmingly the best British musical of the last 10 years (since Billy Elliott)
There's several very good and clever songs, including Naughty, the alphabet song, Quiet, when I grow up. The show is really well constructed, with excellent visuals and character development and it has a powerful message.

It's sweet of those Broadway sharks to keep Matilda open right through Roald Dahl's centenary year of 2016 (and close it the very next day).

I didn't particularly LOVE it, but I certainly appreciated it it. There's a lot of craft that has gone into it. I've seen it only once several years ago, and I think i should see it again one of these days only because my seat wasn't the best and was distracted by the chavs sitting around me.
