There are no words to say how much I hated this yesterday. Switch the HOUSE lights off! The singing was off, gimmicky and I was bored to tears..... 3/10

Hahaa..... and they show the clips where the house lights are on NOT on - which is about 90 percent of the show! Terrible idea.....

It sounds amazing, and I can't wait for a Cast Recording! But visually it doesn't seem like how I wanna see a production of Oklahoma. But that's OK.

I’ve come to recognize that attending theatre with such a relatively simple planning process was a profound privilege. To see Oklahoma! together now, post-stroke, we’d need to think through all of the logistics carefully. Though my dad is still sharp in many ways—he has an acute emotional awareness of himself and others, he keeps up with the news—he no longer has the capacity to play as active a role as he once did in figuring out those logistics. Prompted by my friend’s encouragement, I decided to make the trip happen. I began doing research.

Used my remaining free slot during my New York trip and thought it was excellent. Probably not as radical as it thinks it is, but radical for a Rogers and Hammerstein production! I'd never see a production of "Oklahoma" before and I think it probably helps if you have seen a conventional production before seeing this as some of what is happening is not too clear. Interestingly looking at comments on other productions in recent decades they also talk about bringing out the "hidden darkness" in the piece and also change the dream ballet into a nightmare.
I know there is talk of a transfer over here, don't think it would work at all in a conventional West End theatre. Unlikely to happen but the Young Vic would be ideal - the size is not dissimilar to the Circle in the Square, I think (550 seats vs 750).
Got my ticket for "only" $72 on Tkts, it was on there every day during my trip. Don't seem to be any bad seats in the theatre as it's so small - I got row H of the front facing stalls which was the lowest of three prices I was offered.

This is a very interesting read - there's an excerpt from this on display at the theatre, this is the full version of the article by Frank Rich Oklahoma Was Never Really O.K.Towards the bottom of the page is an interview with Ted Chapin who handles the Rodgers and Hammerstein rights "How Ted Chapin, Custodian of the Rodgers-and-Hammerstein Catalogue, Decides Which Revivals Get the Green Light" Interesting on his views of this, and other "revisionist" productions, including the negotiations that went on between him and Daniel Fish on the ending.
