Caught this today, and it's an absolutely terrific one-hander, in every way, a moving and incisive look into one woman's descent into the seamy side if Instagram, superbly acted by it's writer, Nicole Lecky, who seamlessly inhabits multiple characters and accents, AND sings like she belongs in the charts, as well. Quite astonishing, really, and I'm sorry I didn't catch it earlier, cos it ends in two days, and I can't now realistically benefit anybody by recommending this. For that reason, I hope this transfers, maybe to one of the Trafalgar Studios spaces. This is as much a tour-de-force of performance as "Misty" was for Arinze Kene, it is just as topical, and for my taste, it was more moving, as well. Lecky sings, with all the confessional specificity of early Kate Nash, the soulfulness of Amy Winehouse, and the pop-rnb-soul-electronic stylings of Jessie Ware. I discovered the seamy side of Instagram is a real thing cos I was talking to my barber the other day, and he was raving about how much money his mate makes, £3000 a week he said, stripping off for his thousands of Instagram followers. I wondered how seamy things had to get for that money, though I didn't ask, but this show covers everything that crossed my mind and more. And it gets deep into the heart of the dysfunctional family relationships and economic cul-de-sacs young people find themselves in, that leads to all this, as well as convincingly analysing the poverty of our contemporary society and culture. If the show has a drawback, it's that deep down the story is as old as time, so despite the topical dressing, we kind of already know it, and the show requires so much talent to be performed (acting of multiple characters, accents, singing) that it would be hard to cast again. For that reason, I hope this powerful work has another life in a transfer. Nicole Lecky is exactly the right triple threat to inhabit the character, and perform this show. 4 and a half stars.
