Not sure if I can bring myself to watch this again, I took my niece to this and we had such a good time and were due to do more theatre this summer and now wondering if more theatre will ever be a thing for any of us.
(I expect I will watch though just because I can)

A great trip down memory lane watching this tonight. A fantastic afternoon spent at the Bridge theatre last year and the ending to Act 1 was just so much fun then and it didn’t disappoint watching it on tv.

Diligently watched this again last night - I'm still convinced it's an incredible production of Dream overall however wasn't particularly convinced by its transition onto screen. I know you always lose something in translation but this felt more lost than any other NTLive I've watched over the years. I think it was a combination of not having enough wide shots to appreciate the entire stage, some very strange camera choices (with cuts to a camera before the shot was ready) and the dark lighting - Love On Top is one example of this where you lost focus very quickly as half the time Oberon/Bottom were in darkness and there wasn't much time to appreciate what the fairies were up to.
I'm also coming to the belief that Titania feels so out of place now - obviously she's got this strange mesh of the two roles now however I can't see why this Puck works with this Titania, there's no chemistry there. And that green dress doesn't help, compared to all the other costumes and styles which have clearly been really carefully thought through the outfit sticks out like a pretty cheap prom dress with a few bits from Claire's slapped on it.
Really enjoyed Pyramus & Thisbe, thought that translated well - and the four lovers tended to come across really positively on screen too. Really pleased there's a record of a production which, I suspect, will be spoken about for many years to come as having reinvented what Dream can be.

I did not see this at the Bridge, and did enjoy it on screen, but I do see your point about some strange choices of shorts/angles danielwhit : I would have at moments preferred a broad angle rather than a close-up, since I do feel there were things I missed because of editing/shooting choices. That said, however, I did enjoy it and I thought it was fun: the plot is already so ridiculous, they did their best to make it really over the top and it worked. I did think there were some variations in the quality of the performances (e.g. I was pretty unimpressed by Titania and poor Oliver Chris always looks like he is doing one and the same part to me - he is quite likeable, but I don't think he is particularly versatile or great as an actor). But - in my view - the show got stolen by Hammed Animashaun anyway: I thought he was absolutely brilliant! And the Rude Mechanicals performance is the best "play within a Shakespeare play" I've ever seen! Overall, I quite liked it. :)
