The fanbase for this show is annoying (not all of them, of course). Certain Broadway-related Instagram account posted a pic celebrating its 12 Tony nominations, someone very politely said the show is ok but doesn't deserve Best Musical, and all the SpongeBob Nazis started attacking them.
The whole thing reminds me of the Wicked and Hamilton teenage superfans.

The producers of SpongeBob must have known this when they booked the theatre as it's been mooted for a number of years. |

I imagine that they really only perceived Broadway as the springboard for a national tour.

I can see them doing an arena tour, or one to bigger houses for long stops, but not a national tour in a traditional sense.

TBH I don't think the show is all that complex to transfer from one stop to another. Most of the work is done by the cast handling props or interesting concoctions, but as a set design it's not more or less complex than the so called blockbusters a la Wicked, Phantom, etc.

...Due to previously planned theatre renovations beginning mid-September.
Early in 2019, school and youth group licensing rights will be available, with professional licensing to follow. Additionally, a North American tour will begin fall 2019 (cities, venue engagements and casting to be announced at a later date).

Sad, but not unexpected. The prejudices against crass commercial moneyspinners were too great and in this case led to a mostly innocent casualty. But I'm glad it will have another life on tour which makes me believe that we can still hope for a production on this side of the pond.

I know that there is a lot of love for this show, and I found it charming and harmless, but also grossly overrated.

That’s very sad news, but as Viserys said, not unexpected. To me there was absolutely nothing crass about the show and let’s be honest, any show that is mounted on Broadway will be aiming to be a commercial success ( after all theatre is a business just like any other).
I think the main difficulty for the show was how it should be marketed. It’s not just a kid’s show or for fans of the cartoon, so at Broadway prices, how do you persuade theatre-goers to give it a go, especially when there are other tried and tested shows to choose from?
If you’re a tourist especially, you’d probably be unlikely to take a risk on a show like this.
Also I think there was a lot of preconceived predjudice towards the production before it even opened ( understandably some people thought it was just going to be a theme park style Nickelodeon cash-in and the name Tina Landau wouldn’t have been recognisable to many people outside of the business).
I don’t think the extracts from the show that we’re shown on US TV worked particularly well out of context either.
I assume that the producers must have known that the theatre was due for renovation when the show was booked in there though.
I was a great fan of the ingenuity and big heart of the production. Not to mention the wonderful cast and brilliant score.
It’s a great shame that it’s ending and more people won’t get the chance to see the most uplifting production that I think I’ve ever seen, but I’m happy that it existed for the short time that it did ( in such a bleak time in world history, spending some time in the undersea world of Bikini Bottom was just what was needed).

I really had my heart set on seeing this on my New York trip in January gutted I can't see it now 😒 hopefully this will come over sooner rather than later. I see this doing a limited run either at the palladium or dominon or the colosseum. With the size of the set the Dominon seems perfect for it. I really wanted to see this hopefully it will be over here soon. I can see a newbe or Andrew Polac (Bat out of hell) or John McCrea (Everybody's talking about Jamie) for Spongebob. Jarrad Gertna or some previous Elder Cunningham's (Patrick) Gavin creel could return and Breynnen Lark (Dreamgirls) as Sandy or Pearl. I'm predicting would have a limited run in the Summer 2020 or 2021.

Well, I don't think $19 million is the price of an average Broadway show. And that was the capitalization of the show. Also, it was such a big production that only 4 or 5 houses on Broadway could support the show, three of them (Minskoff, Gerswhin and Lyric) were already filled with big projects. So yes, I guess they won't be coming anywhere, at least not with the same size production, cast, proscenium, etc. |
