Saw this Broadway tryout last night at the Curran in San Francisco. The show features the music of American group The Go-go's. I hadn't heard anything about this show and although Im a proud Kid of the 80's neither I'm familiar at all with The Go-Go's, maybe the were not that big our side of the Atlantic...? I just thought that a pre broadway engagement was a good choice and they had rush tickets available in todayTix.
The plot is an adaptation of Arcadia by English poet Phillip Sidney, again not familiar with the story at all, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable evening. I was fighting a horrible jet lag and not been familiar with the score and missing more than one line I still managed to engaged with the story as it feels incredible current, fresh and liberal, mixing political affairs, cross dressing, sexual fluidity and awakening.
The cast is great, all of them, there isn't really a principal character they all get the chance to shine and carry the story. Even Peppermint, yes from Rupaul's Drag Race season 9, who obviously has no previous broadway experience, managed to do her bit very well and blended perfectly with the rest of the experienced cast.
It's funny how I'm not a big fan of jukebox musicals but it sort of bothered me that I wasn't familiar with the songs and the rest of the audience did however...
Not sure what the New York critics and audiences will do with this but I'm glad I got to see it. Also the Curran looks amazing, I cannot really remember what it looked like last time I was here 12 years ago to see A Chorus Line but the total renovation it took two years ago is undeniable obvious.

Later I found out that someone I know of, Belinda Carlisle, was part of The Go-go's and for at least one number I know one song by heart as we all know that Heaven is a place on Earth
