Does anyone actually say this word?
Thought not. So why write it then? It’s so dismissive and rude IMO.
Say “No” to “Nope”!

What I always think in such circumstances is : Would Dame Joan say this , do this , act like his , wear this. La Collins usually comes up with the right answer. I cannot imagine her ever saying nope! Standards have slipped I can hear her saying and haven't they just!

Is @caiaphas referring to one of Baz Bamigboye's tweets by any chance?! If so, I suspect Baz was maybe just at the end of his tether after getting it in the neck from some parties in recent days.

I do say "nope" sometimes. If my negative is part of a full sentence, I'll default to "no", but it sounds a little terse if it's the only word I'm saying. If the question is something like "I have a doctor's appointment on my lunch break, you don't mind if I'm a little late back, do you?" then "nope! " is as reasonable a response as any (the smiley is to represent the tone in which I am saying it, before any of our favourite "just like to argue for the sake of arguing" friends ask the question). I have similar issues with "yes"; it sounds fine as part of a sentence, but as a word on its own it sounds snippy to me so I'll probably go for (you guessed it) "yep". ("I have a doctor's appointment on my lunch break, is it okay if I'm a little late back?" "Yep! ")

"Nope" is a very different word from "no". For example, if you open an old cupboard and find it filled with spiders then a mere "no" will not suffice and "nope" is quite definitely the correct word to use.

^ I will try to remember that the next time I open an old cupboard and find it filled with spiders. (I like to be correct especially with regard to language usage, as I hope many of my fellow posters have noticed.)

"Nope" is a very different word from "no". For example, if you open an old cupboard and find it filled with spiders then a mere "no" will not suffice and "nope" is quite definitely the correct word to use. That is EXACTLY the right word. I would go as far as "A world of Nope". And yes, I use it- similar to as Baemax says, it's a casual 'no' 'Do you mind if I do x' 'Nope' 'Has that idiot finished at the self service checkout yet' 'Nope' etc etc

To be honest I'm not so bothered by @baemax's liberal use of Yep and Nope, I'm more surprised that the answer she gives to her example question isn't "Who the Hell told you that you had a lunch break? Get back to work and if you look me in the eye again you're fired!".

Jeremy Paxman actually said “Nope!” in response to some poor sod’s answer on University Challenge last night. I can’t be 100% sure, but I thought I heard him say it again bit later. (Same poor sod in the Ulster team who was knocking out guesses wildly just to scrape a few extra points.) He actually said it!
So I concede. It can be said...
(He can be an arrogant sh*t at times, Jeremy Paxman.)

You beat me to it @caiaphas. I thought he did, so I double-checked with subtitles on.
(Actually, by watching with subtitles, I found I understood far more questions. Must be the way my brain works!)
