Happy to keep it, but might be helpful if you elaborate a bit about what your concerns are. Safe in what respect?

Its no different from London or New York or Glasgow or Berlin or Wherever in that respect. Do some research on where not to go and when not to go and you should be fine. edit - SIL is South African and she has never been mugged, kidnapped or shot - more is the pity!

As duncan has just said on the whole its safe, every major city in the world has no go areas which you would need to steer clear of. I've visited 3 times in the last 10 years without an issue. Just be careful as you would be in any place unfamiliar or not.

Johannesburg is the unsafe city in South Africa that, sadly, gives a bad name for the rest of the country. Cape Town is fine. It's like any other major city where you have to be aware of your surroundings and don't put yourself in any bad situations. It's a gorgeous city that everyone should see!

When I was last in Cape Town I stayed in the Presidential Suite at the Mount Nelson Hotel and felt perfectly safe.

Hoxton. Full of hipsters. You'll be covered in moustache wax and drinking out of mason jars before you've even gone ten metres.
But in all seriousness, if you're considering visiting London from overseas, it's extremely unlikely you'll end up anywhere near an unsalubrious area. That must surely apply fairly universally? As with the truth that any major city has unsafe zones, I think there's a truth that any major city you're going to as a visitor is unlikely to have unsafe zones in the places you want to go to.

Not familiar enough to know specifics now but there are places you wouldn't want to venture late at night, estates that have an element of lawlessness about them. I'd be surprised if there's any major cities without such areas As @baemax has said they don't tend to be the sort of areas you would venture in to as a visitor so it's generally not an issue.

Its not just unsafe areas such as estates you have to be careful about when travelling in unfamiliar locations its also ensuring you are sensible when in the major tourist areas and similar busy areas, even in London I ensure I -
don't walk down unilluminated alleys on your own, always ensure you get in a proper taxi, never show wads of cash, keep valuables in inside zipped pockets as much as possible, and never ever buy anything from a tout of any description.

I was just using it as an example having been picked on and quoted even though I hadn't mentioned London in my post as though I was criticising a city randomly.
@jan Brock just out of curiosity why did you quote my post and ask me specifics re London. My post just mentioned that I'd visited Cape Town 3 times in 10 years???

....and anyone who thinks it doesn't have no go areas is living in cloud cuckoo land, I've seen the state of the Jasmine Allan down Sun Hill way.

You said every major city had no go areas. London is a major city. Yes, in St Davids you should beware of the seagulls, or risk death by a thousand pecks.
