Anyone else fondly remember Brian Matthew's long-running BBC Radio 2 programme Round Midnight? From 11pm to 1am every weeknight for years, starting in January 1978, with loads of arts interview/chats, usually four each night. The chat tended to the lightweight but the guests came from a very wide range of the arts including all types of theatre, and Brian Matthew always sounded genuinely and warmly interested in his subjects and guests and was keen to support all their arts activity by making it much more widely known about via his radio programme. The reason I've been recollecting this is that Brian Matthew is returning to present the final Sounds of the Sixties this Saturday morning (8 to 10am) and the programme will look back at his 27 years with the show. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08fw43f

The chat tended to the lightweight Sums him up for me. If he had a mid Atlantic accent he'd be the third member of Smashey and Nicey. The 60's were a hell of a decade for new and exciting music, but every sat morning he founds the most awful tosh to play (and if the producers to blame he should stand up to him/her). The only current presenter worse than him, is Tony Blackburn. OMG.

Tony Blackburn starts as the new regular presenter of Sounds of the Sixties the following week, at the new regular time of 6.00 to 8.00am on Saturday mornings.
