They should do it without the songs and have it as a proper horror or something.

Why can't they leave classics alone.

As theatre fans, who will happily go to production after production after production of Hamlet or Sweeney Todd (and other shows that aren't revenge tragedies), you'd think we'd be a bit more gracious about movie remakes. It gives us the chance to see new interpretations of the original writing, some of which may even be better than the original, and movie remakes are EVEN BETTER than theatrical revivals because you can always go back and watch the original, exactly the same as when you first fell in love with it, at ANY TIME. Which, as we all know, is a luxury sadly not afforded to those who only lose their hearts to that most ephemeral art form known as "theatre".

Wouldn't this just be a new adaptation of the musical rather than a remake

It's the principle of the thing. How dare people enjoy things that I might not enjoy.

Off-topic but when certain TV shows have been remade like Thunderbirds for example people always seem to complain and use the 'couldn't they just show the original' trope forgetting that in these shows great as they are, are over 50 years and feature things that cannot be shown on television anymore.
