word up sisters
so after seeing (act 1) of School of Rock the other day I was wondering about the kids and ow much money the get paid. Do that get paid as much as the adult ensemble? Do they get paid more if they have more lines or play an instrument? Do they get paid by show?

That article although interesting didn't reveal anything about child labour laws, except that the UK casts 39 kids and U.S. Casts 13 which goes to the American obsession of only having the best, never mind the consequences and chasing the dollar. A show I saw last week had a child of kindergarten age appeared at the very end briefly, she does a full 8 shows a week, so this would mean 5 nights a week, she will not be getting to bed until after 11 and after midnight on a Friday/Saturday night. Which for my buck children do need early nights and long sleeps as their body is developing.
So I am very much with the UK labour laws here and the U.S. system is nothing short of barbaric child abuse.

Wasn't there a story a few years ago about the Mathildas only getting about £60 a show? The kids wont care... £120 a week and living you're dream at 10, they wouldn't be at all complaining!  |

I didn't say it was alot of money... I said the kids wouldn't care about money at their age. Most don't work and earn money until they are 16 anyway. |

Most of them are smaller than adults so they can eat smaller portions and save money.

I know the producers of kids shows in the UK have the challenge and expense of rehearsing and chaperoning 3 teams - it must be a nightmare of administration, however, I have always been appalled at how little they are paid. Yes, I know the kids are not doing it for the money and having the time of their lives and living their dreams etc. but it still strikes me as being exploitative as far as the producers are concerned.
Regarding School of Rock the 13 kids on that stage carry the show. They should be remunerated like the adults.

Billy Elliot had huge running costs because of the kids and it probably never would have been produced if the kids were on equity minimum |
