The question really worth asking is "who are they" of the Voice winners and "where are they? ".
They win and are never heard of again!

I do, but as I know her for Dreamgirls, I'd assume that a lot of people outside the general musicals bubble may not have had an opportunity to encounter her before. Although never forget that some people just want you to be aware that they've not heard of someone, like a laconic dismissal makes them so much cooler than quickly googling a name. I'm not sure willful ignorance is particularly cool to be honest but hey, what do I know?  |

I know what you mean, Baemax, but in this case I suppose the benefit of doubt is fair. TV casting shows on both sides of the Atlantic have churned out so many contestants in the last decade, it's impossible to keep track of them. Jennifer Hudson would have been completely under my radar if not for her musical theatre connections - Dreamgirls (now ten years ago!) and now The Colour Purple, though a quick check on her wikipedia page tells me that she's done plenty in-between. I had never heard of Jordin Sparks before I saw her in In the Heights on Broadway and was told she was famous for being a casting show contestant.
Could cite many more examples. Only this morning I read a headline "mass hysteria in shopping mall, dozens of teenagers fainted, event had to be cancelled" - the reason being some 17-year old "German Justin Bieber" boy who apparently has a huge following on youtube... whose name I had never heard before, so my "who wtf is that?" (said to myself, not posted online though) was completely genuine because I have no 12-year old girls in my nearer orbit.

Not having heard of someone is entirely fair, but I find it hard to understand (and am therefore suspicious of) the mindset that would rather broadcast ignorance than take five seconds to find out for myself.  |

I guess to a degree it's a fair enough question. She's not really set the UK charts alight (with 'Spotlight' being her only real solo effort of note plus a guest appearance on an Iggy Azalea song) and the Oscar was almost 10 years ago. Also 'Dreamgirls' didn't really lead into a major movie career either and most people will have no idea that she was in 'American Idol'. She's clearly much more widely known in the US than here. A quick Google search though should probably have most people having some kind of recognition about her.
To be fair to her though, if anyone should be able to judge 'The Voice', it's someone like J-Hud who has a sensational one. the judges usually get to perform throughout the series and personally I can't wait for the show which allows us to hear a collaboration between Jennifer and Sir Tom.

I remember seeing Jennifer in American Idol. She was good, but so were other contestants, so she wasn't a standout performer (I preferred both eventual winner Fantasia Barrino and LaToya London). One thing I do remember about her was that she had attitude (in a good way) and an individual sense of style (on the first live show, she wore a bright pink dress she'd made herself). What saddened me was that once she was in the Hollywood machine, she seemed to shed that spark along with her weight - nice, attractive but rather bland.
I really hope she has the spark back for The Voice, or I can see her being a bit underwhelming as a coach.
I agree that it's annoying when someone invariably asks "Who?" or says "I've never heard of her/him/them!" It's easy enough to google them or search on the tubular website.

Jennifer was great on American Idol, I thought she should have gone a lot further than she did.
She was also in The Colour Purple for a few months on Broadway and also appeared in an episode of Smash.
She had some terrible personal tragedy a few years ago but it was admirable the way she handled herself and the situation she found herself in.

The real question is, who is Gavin Rossdale?! Former Mr Gwen Stefani, father of current 'Strictly' star Daisy Lowe and *gasp* former kind-of-boyfriend of 80s pop star Marilyn. I think he might sing a bit too. |
