I think I saw on Twitter that they're still inviting critics from a wider range of publications, as per the plan, but now they all get a plus-one. So I guess that's fairer, though I still think the critics complaining about only getting one free ticket instead of two free critics were whiny babies about the whole thing.

More likely to be a safety thing, after they realised it was better for the critics to be accompanied by a responsible adult . *cut to Shenton drinking two glasses of wine, whilst looking shifty*

Since when? I am sure I saw him drinking down something that looked like white wine at the A View From Islington North press night. Surely it wasn't apple juice in a wine glass?

As far as I know, he has always been teetotal.

The idea that he should be entitled to take his partner to work with him just makes me swear repeatedly...

The exact opposite to Charles Spencer then.
Anyway in the good old days of Kenneth Tynan, Sheridan Morley and Jack Tinkler the theatre critic was capable of going to the theatre and posting a review all by themselves and have a report for the first addition.

Sheridan Morley used to fall asleep and then his wife wrote his review.

I think the NT were fine, film critics don't bring plus ones. There's no reason you need one. I'd rather a blogger or, dare I say it, ordinary members of the public got more tickets for press nights.
