It opens today in Sydney and just thought we could have a forum here.

Just seen the first look video, I obviously knew this was happening but hadn't read too much about it. Very interesting seeing just how similar but slightly different to the original production it looks. Very strange seeing an Eliza dressed in the same costumes I've seen in old photos.

Is this worth seeing? I'm in Sydney next month and it's having a return engagement.

Is this worth seeing? I'm in Sydney next month and it's having a return engagement. It got mostly 3* reviews first time round. And now it's at the Capitol which is much better suited for musicals than SOH. Plus with Robyn Nevin and Reg Livermore in the cast it can't be too bad. Unfortunately I can't find any discounts for you atm.

Unfortunately I can't find any discounts for you atm. I got a great discount with my crew ID when I saw Les Mis at the Capitol so maybe they'll do the same. Shame there doesn't seem to be any other shows on in Sydney at the moment, and I'm too early for Muriel

Rather nice that they haven't re-named it "You Beauty" or just "Beaut" for Australia. Really?

So I got a "rush" ticket for this for $50 (or just under £30)... Not bad considering how expensive the theatre is in Australia.
Very enjoyable. I thought the cast were very strong. Particularly liked Anna O'Byrne as Eliza and look forward to seeing her in the Charing Cross Woman in White. This is a "recreation" of sorts of the original Broadway production. The sets were relatively simple, and they certainly didn't utilise the whole of the enormous Capitol theatre stage, but they worked for this production.
I've never even seen the film version of My Fair Lady but I was quite familiar with a lot of the musical numbers. Act one is by far stronger than act two which aside from a couple of new numbers is a lot of reprises. It's also a very long show at 3 hours 10. I was actually surprised at how quickly it ended, there is quite a lot still left unwrapped at the end and so very little payoff.

I've never even seen the film version of My Fair Lady Seriously? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember when they did an anniversary week of showings at the ABC Shaftesbury Avenue. That extended to almost a month - and it's the first newspaper advert I'd ever seen telling people not to turn up unless they had booked, as it was sold out. Gawd strewth! It must be very different in Australia. I would bet that there was nobody alive in the UK with a TV set that had not seen 'My Fair Lady', 'The Sound of Music' or 'Pretty Woman', three movies that are shown constantly on UK TV. As regards the plot strands left unwrapped at the end, I think that is down to Mr G.B. Shaw's original play. Shaw did in fact write an extensive explanation of what happened to the principal characters after the end of the play, which I presume can be found in any printed copy of the play, but he also said that people should be able to work it out for themselves. His actual words are: "The rest of the story need not be shewn in action, and indeed, would hardly need telling if our imaginations were not so enfeebled by their lazy dependence on the ready-mades and reach-me-downs of the ragshop in which Romance keeps its stock of 'happy endings' to misfit all stories." So that's you told, Mark!

I'm surprised myself that I've never seen the film. I am only 26 though and tend to go for theatre than movie versions. I've never even seen Moulin Rouge, and I think I'm one of the few people who's seen the stage version of dirty dancing but never the film.
As for the ending, indeed that's me told. I shall have to have a look for those notes!

I went to see it because there was an Australian actor in it called Richard O'Brien, although he had to change his name because we already have a very famous Richard O'Brien ( Rocky Horror Show) in the UK. And I envy you that you can go to see musicals at the Sydney Capitol, a magnificent theatre in every respect. Lucky Mark! I hope you are going to see Madama Butterfly next month.

Oops! I realise now that Mark is just visiting Sydney and I guess won't be there for "Madama Butterfly" in October. I have seen several operas at the Capitol and they were top class, aided in no small way by the acoustics and sight lines of the wonderful theatre. In fact, I went four times to see Richard Strauss's "Elektra" and sat in different parts of the house and it was perfect every time. I should also say that I hated the Australian production of "Billy Liar" at the same venue but that's because it was a travesty of the original London production, made even more strange because I was told that the show was being prepared for its Broadway run that was going to be based on the changes made for the Australian production. Orrore! as somebody usually says in most Verdi operas.

The Capitol is such a gorgeous venue. I was looking around at the architecture during the interval and it's truly unique.
Always fun to catch a show on my infrequent nights in Sydney (and elsewhere!)

Mark is right about the Capitol. In the 1960s, Sydney lost many of its best theatres and cinemas which were torn down in the name of commercial redevelopment and most of them were not replaced. However a few did survive, the best two being the Capitol and the State. The Capitol was superbly refurbished by Cameron Mackintosh when 'Miss Saigon' first played in Sydney and the State has managed to keep going mainly for films but the occasional live show like Barbara Cook's 'It's Better With a Band' at a Sydney Festival some years ago. If anybody is interested, just go to Google Images and put in 'Capitol Theatre Sydney' and 'State Theatre Sydney' for some spectacular pictures.

One of my earliest theatre memories is seeing Jesus Christ Superstar at the Capitol, and spending most of the time fascinated by the starry sky ceiling. I was convinced we were really outdoors!

I googled Capitol Theatre, Sydney, and it does indeed look beautiful . I love theatres like this , although there are a few modern theatres I like too (I don't intend to divert the thread though) such as the beautiful Wales Millenium Centre, Cardiff, and the Royal Exchange in Manchester.
