The Orchestra sound great.
I'm really not a fan of Charlie's New Yorker/Brooklyn accent, its really grating on the ears.
I don't really know if I like the amount of talking either, especially Christian chats a lot on this Cast Recording.
Its nice to hear songs like Candy Man and Pure Imagination.
The Willy Wonka number is awful. The songs from the West End version, no particularly exciting changes.
If Your Father Were Here, for me, is a highlight, Emily sings it beautifully.
Is The View From Here the final number in the actual show or has a song been cut. Because that's a massive anti-climax to the Recording.

Now. My question going into this Recording, why does it exist? Why do we need it? There is no real changes to the songs from the West End production, the songs from the film are great but we know them, there is no star turn or phenomenal things vocally.

My guess is that whatever they have running now on Broadway is the definitive version of the show (the fact that they may have ruined it even further non-withstanding) so wanted it to be recorded? Totally guessing, it might not be. I mean when Sister Act transferred they changed numbers and the book but no Broadway recording, which I was slightly surprised at. Even though they kept Patina Miller. But Charlie has a new director, new choreographer, new design, new songs, new vision, it's hard to even call it a transfer of the London production! Plus the fact that Broadway records almost anything and everything for a cast recording, so as equally as bemused am I as you are, I'm not surprised. |

This recording is 10x better than the West End one.
For me, Christian is a much better sounding Wonka than Douglas Hodge (who I still love)
Its got the score it felt like it deserved now, with the film songs back in - Candy Man gave me the biggest smile.
Andd The View From Here is beautiful. Yes, slightly anti-climatic if it is the end, but still gorgeous

Without Candy Man and Golden Ticket it would be a total dud.

I, personally, don't think this edition is any better. In fact the inclusion of the original films songs just turn it from a decent standalone show into a poor mans tribute to the movie. Without the inclusion of the original movies songs the changes to the original musicals recording are forgettable and I feel fairly indifferent.

Such a shame the world of theatre gets some shows right while others fall - Charlie is such a wonderful musical film. With a different composer, magnificent set, book, creative and production team there is an award winning show there somewhere. I suppose we will now never see it. Just imagine what it could have been....
