Not sure if a thread like this exists already, but I'd love to hear this board's thoughts on the increasing use of AI-generated artwork in shows and show marketing. Examples recently off the top of my head are the Amaze show using AI art all over the marketing, the ENO season cover images, London Palladium panto backgrounds. And who can forget the Willy Wonka debacle.
Over the past few weeks I've been catching more and more use of it in show posters and set decoration and it only comes off as lazy and distracting by virtue of it looking lazy and distracting. In almost all circumstances I notice it because it looks terrible, in most cases a human artist would never let certain things fly.
It not only comes off as a cost-cutting measure, but also it makes me not want to see your show if you can't be bothered to make your own art... or hire an artist?? It says something about the attitudes of people involved. It's the arts, damnit!  |

I hear a lot about AI. Companies are already firing people and leaving some on to brush up ai writing or artwork
And the thing is whilst the artwork is noticeably ai generated, it is getting better and better. You'll be questioning whether any work is ai or not soon because you can't tell
On the flip side, it's actually costing companies to maintain the infrastructure to keep ai going. Imagine how crypto miners need dozens of these data banks and computers to keep mining. Ai doesn't run on its own it needs power, as far as I know.
It's hard to know whether companies will realise AI is not efficient enough to use, YET. But it will cost jobs in the meantime

ITs crept into alot of amdram posters in my area and it bugs me a lot. While these groups don't pay much they are still a part of the eco system of developing artists

The budgets just doesn't allow for that. Is it better to use AI or to directly use artwork without permission? I have put together posters by assembling free images that have the right CC permissions. I have had permission from artists to use their work for free. I have often commissioned digital artists and photographers to create the necessary images. But only on shows with overall budgets north of £40k have I had enough space in the marketing pot to pay for a designer. Am dram is financially very precarious. However there is no excuse for professional companies who do gave the resources to pay for all creative elements to not do so. Particularly if they receive external grant funding. |

My issue doesn't really lie with am dram but when big West End productions use it. I understand the struggle am dram groups face so them having to use an amount of AI artwork doesn't bother me as much. It looks pretty accurate, see if you can spot yourself. I'm the disembodied pair of legs around the middle. |
