We’re a few days to go before the cut-off for this season - 27 April, and a week before the nominations are announced (2 May) Would love to hear your thoughts and predictions!
Three Olivier Award winners for Best New Play are eligible for Best New Play at the Tony Awards - Leopoldstadt (won in 2020), Life of Pi (2022), and Prima Facie (2023) - this is probably the first time this is happening in history. And a lot of new play contenders this year - The Thanksgiving Play, Fat Ham, Cost of Living, Summer 1976, Between Riverside and Crazy, etc.
As for Best Actress in a Play - Jodie Comer could follow-up her Olivier win with another trophy - if this happens, she’s only an Oscar away to be a member of the elite Triple Crown of Acting club! This could also be a scenario for Laura Linney (who’s yet to win a Tony despite multiple nominations), Jessica Chastain (whose limited series George & Tammy makes her one of the Emmy frontrunners, and if she wins both the Tony and Emmy, she could be the TCA winner with the shortest time to complete the top awards), Rachel Brosnahan, Zoe Wanamaker, Audra McDonald, etc.
Best New Musical - would the Tonys completely snub Bad Cinderella??? There’s a lot of newbies - Some Like it Hot, Kimberly Akimbo, Shucked, &Juliet, etc.
I hope they make a tribute to Phantom at the awards ceremony now that it closed at the Majestic last week.

I hope and expect Jodie Comer will win; it's such an incredible tour de force of a performance.
Kimberly Akimbo should swipe the main musical theatre Tonys, it's EXACTLY the kind of "small underdog show" that has consistently won in the last ten years or so. Though I keep hearing good things about Shucked, too and Some Like It Hot and New York New York in showy categories like choreography. Bad Cinderella might get a nod in a few minor categories like costumes, but definitely nothing that would help to improve the dismal sales.

A really great season.
For Best Musical, I can see the nominees being Kimberly Akimbo, Some Like it Hot, Shucked, & Juliet and New York New York. That said, I think KPOP should take the final slot over NYNY. This one is Kimberly's to Lose. Best Revival is a three way split between Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd and Parade. I think that will really just come down to voter preference rather than there being a clear winner (ITW maybe less so since it closed already).
Best Play, I think will go to Leopoldstadt. I saw it a second time on my November visit and it really is a brilliant play. Other nominees being Prima Facie, Life of Pi, Between Riverside and Crazy. Maybe Peter Pan Goes Wrong could pick up a nom here too, it's been very well received. Play revival noms I see going to The Piano Lesson, A Doll's House, Death of a Salesman, Topdog/Underdog. I think Piano Lesson might take it.
For musical performances, Best Actress in a Musical I see going to Victoria Clarke. The best actor race is more interesting - I'd personally give it to Ben Platt, but J. Harrison Ghee could well take it. Featured Actress has a lot of competition, Bonnie Milligan, Betsy Wolfe, Natasha Yvette Williams - all giving worthy performances. Featured actor too, with Alex Newell eligible in this category they must be the favourite, but Justin Cooley is also giving a wonderful performance in Kimberly Akimbo, and Gaten Matarazzo in Sweeney Todd I can also see in the field.
Play performances. Jodie Comer is pretty much a lock to win Best Actress. Best Actor, i'd love to see go to Stephen Mckinley Henderson - I came out of Between Riverside and Crazy and thought that was the winning performance and haven't felt that since, though I know Sean Hayes is coming up a popular choice for Good Night Oscar (which I haven't seen). Featured Actress - Sharon D. Clarke of course! Featured Actor is a harder choice. Maybe Brandon Uranowitz for Leopoldstadt.
Technical awards for Plays to be dominated by Life of Pi. For Musicals, I see Some Like it Hot and New York New York battling for the awards like Choreo/Orchestrations/Scenic Design/Sound Design

From talking to friends, momentum right now is absolutely going towards “Kimberly Akimbo” for Best Musical and Victoria Clark will almost assuredly take Best Actress, as well. I predict other winners will be Jodie Comer (she has no competition this year), Sean Hayes and J. Harrison Ghee. I also can’t imagine “Leopoldstadt” not winning Best Play, if only to honor Stoppard for his career and for this, his last Play (plus it deserves the award).

Prima Facie not getting nominated for Best Play sounds about right to me tbh, and pleasantly surprised for Ruthie Ann Miles. I'm sad Hiran Abeysekera missed out, but Life of Pi has not been received as enthusiastically as in London, and at least he bagged nods from all other major awards.

Prima Facie not getting the nod sounds right based on the strength of the play in all objectivity, but I felt that the reviews felt more positive about it over there then here.

- Prima is earning almost a million dollars gross per week and it will do more now that the nominations are out. It even got an extension until July 2! The show’s Olivier wins (especially Jodie’s), the topical subject matter, word of mouth from her stans (there’s one Jodie fan account I follow on Instagram which diligently reposts every curtain call and every stage door encounters), really helped. I don’t know if Killing Eve was as phenomenal in the US as it was in the UK. (The final season really fumbled but the general consensus was the first two seasons were truly prestige dramas) Jodie just turned 30 last March and she’s about to be part of the Triple Crown of Acting club on both sides of the Atlantic (Oscar, Emmy, Tony & BAFTA TV, BAFTA Film, and Olivier).
- Although Jessica Chastain has a home court advantage, but Jodie is one of a kind. Jessica is also vying for the Triple Crown. (If she gets nominated for an Emmy for George & Tammy) I wonder with the success of A Doll’s House, would they still push through staging it at the West End?
- Sad for Hiran missing out for Best Actor and Life of Pi missing out on Best Play. I don’t know how will this affect their ticket sales. The reviews are mixed at best. Not a full on flop but if this was a phenomenal hit at the West End, it wasn’t the same on Broadway. I don’t know what happened. How are they marketing this show?
- I wish the Death of a Salesman team campaigned for Sharon D. Clarke for Best Leading Actress. Broadway’s general rules is that anyone who is star billing/above the title billing is automatically for Leading Actor/Actress category, unless the committee gives its ruling. The switch for Featured Actress likely confused the voters/nominations.
- Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ just announced that they will close this May 14th. No Tony nominations. So how long will they keep on Bad Cinderella?

“Dancin” doesn’t have a billionaire behind it to pump money into it, like “Bad Cinderella” does. Not saying ALW will do that but he certainly can if he wants to.

At the stage door I asked Jodie if she was serious about wanting to do a musical and she said she absolutely was. I don’t see her as being a “one and done” theater kind of person. She’ll be back.

There was a 12 year gap between Jodie Comer's 'actual' stage debut, at the SJT in Scarborough, and Prima Facia, so she may not be back for a while!  |
