I wanted to mark the sad death of Josephine Melville, who was in the company of Nine Night, playing Auntie Maggie, first at Leeds Playhouse, and then in Nottingham.
She died backstage last Thursday night, following that evening's performance.
It's such a shock, as I had been to see it just a few days before, at the penultimate performance in Leeds. Her line, delivered brilliantly, about a nine-month-old child "longing for a piece of chicken" will probably stay with me until the end of my days.
Understandably, all remaining performances of Nine Night have now been cancelled.

She was a longtime board member of my local theatre - Stratford East - having grown up in the area. She had appeared in the Stratford East panto. She was clearly very involved with community work and did all sorts of workshops for various organisations. www.stratfordeast.com/about-us/whos-who/board-of-directors/
