Joanna Ampil is an absolute musical theatre megastar. So talented but also so humble and so charming. If anyone can make this work, she can! Anyway, I am really looking forward to this; fascinated to see what they do with it. And after the recent (ish) West End revival and subsequent tour (which I caught in Manchester and was simply stunning) it's great to have Miss Saigon back in the UK so soon. Truly one of the best scores ever written IMHO. Are Sheffield Crucible known as a producing house? Confess to not knowing much about them but had thought (perhaps wrongly) they were mainly a receiving house for tours. And snooker. The crucible is part of Sheffield Theatres. The Crucible and Crucible Studio are producing houses, the Lyceum which is next door is the receiving house and gets all the usual tours. The Crucible is a stunning building and it’s always an absolute pleasure to go to my home town to see something there. I’ll be booking at least one trip to Miss Saigon!

It'll be an interpretive dancer who identifies as a helicopter, and you will enjoy it. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Recent graduate Desmonda Cathabel as Kim? I'm wondering about Sha Dessi (current Eponine). She reminds me of Monique Wilson when she was in Miss Saigon.

I got quite excited until I read 'female Engineer'. For goodness sake, why? Surely you mean “why god why.”

I’ll be booking at least one trip to Miss Saigon! Will you be travelling by train BurlyBeaR? At least at that time of year it will be light enough to see the Peak District in all it's glorious magnificence.

Definitely booking for this - I love MISS SAIGON. Superior to LES MIS in my opinion (and I love that piece too). I remember seeing the UK tour (around 2005?) and falling head over heels for it. I went to the recent West End revival and didn’t love it as much, but I am looking forward to seeing this “reimagining” in Sheffield.

I don’t think they’ll go anywhere near trying to recreate the helicopter. Even the touring version of that effect was stunningly executed. From the stalls I could almost feel my ears blowing back. It’s become so iconic that even if it wasn’t for the fact that it has to be designed for a very large thrust stage I think the Crucible would want do it quite differently.

General booking opens tomorrow at 10am sharp. Don't be late! Press night is Thursday 13 July. Sadly, tickets aren't available for the hoi polloi, which is regrettable for a subsidised theatre. Really simple pricing structure: £15, £25, £35 and £45. Be warned that prices will rise if there's high demand. Anyone planning on seeing Standing at the Sky's Edge and Miss Saigon may wish to consider a subscription.

I actually did get a subscription for this - limited dates I could do and I have a few specific favourite seats at the crucible, so got what I wanted the night before press night. I’m not completely sold on the idea of a female engineer but I am completely sold on Joanna Ampil so will go with an open mind.

Pretty painless booking process, was put in a queue at 1 minute to 10 and was in within a couple of minutes and managed to get 2 of the £35 seats for £5 each due to being under 26, fantastic deal and what a great way to get young people into the theatre!

Very painless booking - got a couple of the £35 seats for a Saturday matinee near the start of the run. First visit to this theatre!

Not painless for me so far, couldn't pay because cardholder field empty but there's no cardholder field... trying again on laptop rather than phone so back in the queue.

Also got exactly what I wanted for a Saturday matinee with no problems at all.
Reasonable prices, one of my favourite musicals and one of my favourite theatres too so well worth the 400 mile round trip. Ticket received immediately and already printed, diaried and filed.

Those who know the venue and local audience well, how likely is this to sell out?

Those who know the venue and local audience well, how likely is this to sell out? Nothing sells out right now. I want to book, but I just can't confirm dates I can be in Sheffield next summer yet for various reasons. But I'm sure there will be seats available, especially singles.

Those who know the venue and local audience well, how likely is this to sell out? Sky’s Edge sold out during the run I think ( TallPaul will remember if I’m wrong). Same with Life of Pi. I’ve just booked a matinee and a LOT of the central £45 seats have gone already. Having said that the back four or 5 rows aren’t on sale, sometimes they will put them on sale if demand is high, sometimes they don’t. I wouldn’t hang about if interested to be honest, even if you only get the best £15 ticket you can see and risk losing it if you can’t go. Got mine for £5 as I had a credit. Result!

Might just take the plunge and book. My husband is from Leeds and we down regularly so wouldn’t mind planning a trip around the show then taking a wee day trip to Sheffield to watch it.

How did you make it £5? If you create a Sheffield Theatres account and put in your date of birth it automatically gives you the deal at checkout for any seats below top price, and you can get a maximum of two seats. The offer is only valid for performances from the 8th-20th July though (presumably the preview period) and it’s something like 40 tickets of this nature available per week, so the allocation could possibly be sold out by now.

Thanks to the folks here for bringing this to my attention, 2x £35 seats booked - really interested to see what they do with this. The longer I think about a female engineer, the more I can see it working - I think this could make it darker. Am really looking forward to it!

Thank you for sharing this. In case anyone can’t watch for whatever reason, here are the takeaways. - She was invited to a meeting with Sheffield Theatres to discuss a role in a musical without knowing what it was. At the meeting she was told it was to play the Engineer and she immediately accepted. - The role will be played as a woman, with whole new backstory and what sounds like heavy rewrites. - Rehearsals begin on the first week of June and will last 5 weeks. Prior to this, she is in Korea playing Grizabella in Cats. - She doesn’t know anything about other casting, but has another meeting with the production team soon where she may find out more. - She doesn’t see the point in talking to former Engineers such as Leo Tavarro Valdez or Jon Jon Briones because she her character is going to be very different. That about covers the new information!
