Agree about Cynthia but Bridgerton is massive and has been streamed for over a billion hours, Jonathan is pretty well known now. It's just a shame he'll have barely anything to do.

Plus I can imagine a couple of huge names yet to be revealed - you know, for the posters…

It feels like when they cast musical movies we always want the parts to go to musical theatre actors but instead we always get lumped with James Corden and other Hollywood actors trying to sing. And now we have 3 parts so far that have all gone to people with theatre experience and genuinely great singing voices and now we’re complaining that the film doesn’t have enough recognisable names to sell tickets.
Ariana is a huge name and will absolutely draw a lot of her fans in to watch this movie. Cynthia and Jonathan don’t have that same level of following but both are recognisable faces within the industry. And Jonathan is in one of the biggest tv shows in the world right now so a lot of people will recognise his face when they start putting out trailers.
At the end of the day I don’t think any of us really need to be sat here worrying about ticket sales. I just want a good movie (or 2) out of it and if it flops at the box office then it’s really none of my concern. West Side Story bombed at the box office but it was still a great movie that I can continue to love despite that.

A film of this scale and budget is never gonna be cast with your favourite musical theatre performers who did the role for 2 years a few years ago. It’s a Hollywood movie, it needs the pull of a few names, but at least they’ve gone for genuine talent with MT experience.

They need a name Morrible I think. I've heard two different people for Morrible one is Hannah Waddingham and the other is Michelle Yeoh

I’d say hanna was a MT name but not a “name”. As for the other one I’ve never heard of her!
I was thinking Midler, Streep, Baranski etc. Proper names!

I had to look up Michelle Yeoh and I'm still none the wiser who she is. I am probably not the demographic audience for the film anyway.

I think the producers are trying to appeal to the older theatregoers who would have seen it years ago. Making 2 movies imo is silly. I do not think that today's audiences will relate to it as much since they have so many other causes. Probably direct to a video platform I do not see it opening in theatres. The star power of the one casting they could easily have done to get people in seats is not there. Do you realize Fiyero has gone from Zac Efron, Nick Jonas, Justin Bieber, Harry Styles now to someone who is known to the general worldwide public for Bridgerton and that is cable. Unless they think Aria Grande will bring in all the people, there is not one name to attract a general audience. And yes he has theatre credits but that does not translate to tickets when he is not that well known. None of the actors you named had been cast as Fiyero. Their names have been rumoured, but that's all they were, rumours.
Zac Efron has already played the love interest in a movie musical and wouldn't do it again, same with Meryl playing the baddie type character in a musical.
Also, by the time the movie opens in cinemas in 2024, some of the people in it might have a far bigger profile. But at the same time, some of them might have disgraced themselves and hurt the movies chances!

So far every single announcement about this has left me either annoyed (Cynthia, the two movie thing) or underwhelmed (Ariana, Jonathan). I'd just like to hear something and instantly say "Oh wow, yes, that's fanatastic". The suggestion of Bette Midler as Morrible I liked, that would do it, but it's not going to happen.
Just one awesome thing. One. Shouldn't be much to ask.

I'm mostly wondering how they're going to style it out when the characters are supposed to be young students, and two of the leads are mid 30s!

She went quiet for a while due to family commitments, but in terms of MT you might remember her as Desiree in the Menier production of A Little Night Music, and the Witch in the Regents Park Open Air Into the Woods, and the Witch in ALW’s Wizard of Oz. She’s fabulous - if you’re not already familiar with her work I’d highly recommend it!

Given another of its Emmy-winning stars, Brett Goldstein, has been cast in MCU films etc, casting directors very much consider it a hot ticket to some premium picks. And Waddingham, another Emmy winner for Ted Lasso, is about to star in Hocus Pocus 2, if that helps.

No it doesn’t really, because we’re talking about who they need to cast for Morrible now in order for the film to appeal across the board and as talented as she might be, and as much as her profile might be increasing HW is not movie star casting. Anyway I feel I’ve invested way too many posts into Mme Morrible so let’s agree to differ eh 🙂

Of course the remedy is that you invest some time in ‘Ted Lasso’ BB. It is fantastic tv, not at all niche. It might appear to be about football on the surface but is really just a fish out of water story and how he touches peoples lives. Fabulous performances all round and just a breath of fresh air.

Hannah is also going to be in Hocus Pocus 2. I don’t think it’s a relatively big part but still we know the cult following that franchise has and how many people will watch the sequel.
Edit: Sorry I just saw someone else mentioned this above

Veering back to the present however, Michelle Yeoh is definitely more famous than HW in Hollywood terms.
Bond Girl, Crouching Tiger, Oscar-bait like Memoirs of a Geisha, played Aung San Suu Kyi, box office hits (Crazy Rich Asians), Marvel & now one of the most successful independent films at the BO ever - Everything Everywhere All At Once, for which she will possibly get a lot of attention come Awards time.
So, yeah, she’s a thing.

So, yeah, she’s a thing. And more recently she was Philippa Georgiou in Star Trek - Discovery, for the nerds among us. She was fierce in that and could definitely carry some of that over into Morrible.

Her performance in Crazy Rich Asians shows how she can seem benevolent one moment and switch to villain so easily. Of course Morrible is more villainous than her CRA character.

Thank you, she was great in EEAAW too. Some on here really can’t choose between big names or bway actors. Just know that all is going to be ok until J*mes C*rden shows up. And, Ariana’s fanbase is absolutely huge. The music is on hold due to the films to come,, so her fans really are waiting for this too.. I do worry that this will translate to film poorly though. No CGI nightmares please

Winnie Holzman did an interview earlier this year where she talked about adapting the show for the film.

I think it’s important to remember what Wicked is a global phenomenon - even people who don’t know much about MT will know Wicked exists, even if they don’t know what it’s about. As such the need to stunt cast is less than something like the recent film adaption of The Prom for example.
