Nobody saying they’re too old to be playing high schoolers then? AG is the same age as Ben Platt and Erivo is 35! There is a reasonable difference between the two but I do take the point for sure - however DEH is grounded in a musical version of "our reality", whereas Wicked is, well, not. Plus Glinda starts as a university student, Elphaba starts as older than this - and there's a, I think, 3(?) years gap between Act 1 and Act 2. So they start older than Evan and co too.

…and also, this just in from our breaking news team, it is set in a magical land with talking animals, witches and wizards…at least one of which is green. I have never seen a ‘Panorama’ about any of those things so am assuming that it is a work of ‘fiction’…make believe…rather than set in a real University.

I know it sounds silly, but I was hoping for more of a Kristin Chenoweth "type" for Glinda. Someone who fits the young blonde popular girl image BUT also has that quirky comic edge.
As for their ages, I mean the show is set in a University, not a high school, so it's not too important.

In regards to their ages it’s important to remember that only part of the show is set when they’re at university age, where Elphaba is already supposed to be older than the first year students, and then half is set years later when they’ve essentially morphed into their Wizard of Oz counterparts. So while Cynthia will have to age down, Arianna will also have age up.
I really hope Idina and Kristen have cameos in the movie. Idina would be a great Melena (Elphaba’s mother) and I can see Kristen playing a newly created character such as an Emerald City citizen or even Glinda’s mother if they can find a way to shoe horn her in there.

Cynthia has the voice and maturity for an older Elphaba, Ariana has the star power and youth.
Both good studio choices but I'm not sure how they'll read next to each other on screen.
My concern is that Ariana will revert to her pop style if singing and her acting experience may not be present.

Pretty sure that Ari could slay the optional high line in No One Mourns The Wicked.

If Ariana starts riffing and running in Good News I’ll be taking my nachos and my bucket of cola and leaving 😑

She has a superb voice, I agree. However, acting-wise she was great in The Colour Purple but hasn't otherwise convinced me her acting is anything exceptional. And Elphaba is a very different prospect from Celie. Does her acting need to be exceptional? I don't think I've ever seen an Elphaba whose acting I thought was exceptional. She has an Oscar nomination for acting and it's a movie musical, not a very profound piece of drama (no offence), I think she'll do OK. if we are worried about acting, then we should worry about Ariana. Well they are presumably only going to make a film of this show once in my lifetime so I don't think it's too much to ask for the acting to be excellent as well as the singing. Just because it isn't a profound piece of drama doesn't mean that just passable has to do. I used the word "exceptional" because I figured I might be jumped on if I dared to use a less complimentary word, but clearly even my more flattering choice of words has offended. You don't have to be so defensive of her, you are entitled to think she's fabulous but people are also allowed to think she isn't a great actress. The sad truth is that much of the time Oscar nominations are about who you know and who campaigns for you as much as your talent, so I don't take that as any indication of who is better or worse than anyone else.

Cynthia is fast becoming a one role actress and it might be a case of lightning striking once. She was excellent in color purple but after that she's been fine but nothing note worthy.
Her career and box office since xolor purple hasn't soared, and compared to ariana she isn't close to as big a ox office name. Although if this does well it could be the role that makes her a household name.
As someone else said in a way I'm more concerned how the cgi and overall look of the movie is

I would be shocked if Ariana ever gets an acting nomination. Nobody said she has the same name recognition as Ariana. Almost nobody who they could have cast would have that. I can see why some people don’t like Cynthia given some of her previous antics but I just don’t get the questioning of her credentials/ talent.

Not too impressed with this, but could've been worse. Cynthia Erivo is fine as a talent, not amazing, but big question marks about her personality.
They waited too long. Imagine prime Idina and Chenoweth compared to these two.

Disappointing casting. Cynthia Erivo is talented, but too old for the part and I just don’t like what I know of her personally. Very reluctant to support anything she’s in. As for Ariana - there’s a great voice there somewhere but I can never understand a word she says.

Then there’s the whole Dorothy issue - you can’t make a movie where an unseen character kills off your protagonist. You can’t just have her turning up throwing a bucket of water either, so it has to tell Dorothy’s story (to a point) in order to explain what in the hell is happening. Unless things have changed since the shows creation, or they have been allowed to for the film, Wicked doesn't have the rights for anything 'Wizard of Oz' related. That's why Dorothy is never named, or seen, they're not called Ruby slippers, no munchkins etc. Disappointing casting. Cynthia Erivo is talented, but too old for the part They waited too long. Imagine prime Idina and Chenoweth compared to these two. Idina was 32 when she opened in Wicked on Broadway and 35 when she opened the show in London. She was never the right age for the role either. I don't understand why people say Cynthia is too old when they will have played the role at similar ages. I'm looking forward to seeing Cynthia in the green makeup. she will look gorgeous. Actually i haven't seen any actress in the green make up and not look amazing. But not the 'new, Hamburg blue green' That looks odd to me.

When Idina is great, she's great, but those other times....At least Erivo doesn't have a history of singing flat.

When Idina is great, she's great, but those other times....At least Erivo doesn't have a history of singing flat. Well it's a movie, with studio time, audio sweetening, unlimited takes - it would've suited her perfectly back then. But it didn't happen, and I'll see the movie with the cast they've chosen regardless. I just don't find either of the casting decisions we know about particularly interesting, and I haven't rated Erivo that highly the times I've seen her.

In stage to film musicals like this, the casting director is a thankless role, whoever is cast. I'd love to know who it got down to, in the final few. I dont even recall Erivo's name being mentioned for this at any point.
Christine Baranski or Imelda Staunton for Morrible, although that might be too similar to Dolores Umbrudge.
Joel Gray for the The Wizard.
Mason Gooding for Fiyero.
Kristin Chenoweth as Chistery
Idina Menzel as The Midwife
Ali Stroker for Nessarose
Daniel Radcliffe for Boq

Just to clear my name, the post you've attributed to me above wasn't actually posted by me. I was quoting another member and then disagreeing with them, pointing out basically the same thing you are here - which is that there is no need to see any more of Dorothy in a Wicked movie, even if they were able to clear certain rights. Re: ages, although Erivo is of a similar age to Menzel when she played the role in London I do think there's a difference between stage and film performances. There's certainly more leeway when it comes to casting different ages on stage - the film medium is less forgiving due to closeups and various other factors which need to stand up under scrutiny. Having said that, I personally don't have a problem with the age of either performer - as others have mentioned, the story spans several years. But I was surprised Erivo is only 35. I was sure she was older than that, only due to the amount of early success she had which makes it feel like she's been around forever!!

Oh I know, but Oscars don't equal box office appeal or wider recognition. And plenty of big names have also seen career drop offs after winning an Oscar. I'm not saying she isn't talented, just the reality hasn't lived up to the color purple hype as yet. Like I say, maybe wicked will change all that but the early hype hasnt as yet been lived up to. Also hopefully wicked will turn the tide of recent movie musicals
