I can imagine tourists will pay that price tbh. Oscar nominee and a classic American play, so maybe they're relying on that, but on Twitter I saw Millennial and Gen Z fans of the actor Paul Mescal queuing and then bailing out disappointed when they saw the ticket prices, also adding that if they'd known the prices beforehand they wouldn't have spent time online queuing. It's a shame because if you want to nurture and draw in a new audience to theatre, having a TV star like this is the perfect way to do it, but the prices create the impression for newcomers that theatre is for the rich. Exactly, and the extortionate prices very likely turn off those potential audiences from trying something again if they think those prices are generally indicative. Bad for the theatre ecology as a whole.

Anyone who was desperate to see Paul Mescal in Streetcar would have booked tickets for the Almeida run. The West End run is essentially a bonus.
If the producers were really greedy, they wouldn't have offered dayseats or lottery at all and some shows don't like Shirley Valentine and The Unfriend.

This is true but also, by and large the general public who don't normally go to see plays wouldn't have known about Streetcar when it was at the Almeida, not until they'd read the press reviews maybe. Now on the other hand, with all the publicity and with PM Oscar nominated, it would be much more in people's radar. The day seats thing is hilarious, I wonder what they're going to get people to do outside the theatre.

Yes, this must be true, because there were almost 5,000 people ahead of me in the queue and my waiting time was supposed to be 45 minutes.... Very quickly however I moved up and waited no more than 30 minutes. I gave up as well, by the way.

Sorry if I'm missing joke-speculation, but I would assume it'll just be a random draw.
General day seats question from an American: On Broadway there's a distinction between an in-person rush (first come first serve) and an in-person lottery (everyone's name entered in a hat). While I've been over here, I've so far assumed that day seats = rush, but then this "game of chance" is being called day seats. Is that always the case for in-person lotteries?

What they're calling day seats is basically a lottery too and isn't usually what day seats are like. It sounds like the first 30 people in the 'day seat' queue will be entered into a lottery/game of chance, which is drawn at 4.30pm. And then they're also doing an actual lottery which anyone, with no limit, can join.

It's a small theatre and the tickets sold out immediately. If you're young and new to theatregoing you won't really know the 'hacks' to get tickets for a sell out show and if you're not London-based, trying for returns on the day isn't an option either.

'However, the opportunity to buy them is allocated via a game of chance that takes place in-person outside the Phoenix Theatre. There are only 10 day seats available in total, and five winners will have the chance to purchase a pair.' What is this nonsense? Just say people have to go queue up early...a game of chance? This is nuts Urgh I hate this, just let people queue like the good old days! Pay £300 or queue all day for a chance to be humiliated. ATGs avarice knows no bounds.

Good Grand Circle seat for 7.30 pm on 13th April now on for £37.50 - D14.
Also good stalls seat - J13 - on at 2.30pm on 27th April. It's £200 but still cheaper than most others at this stage.

So gracious, she really is wonderful in this. It’s incredible to think how she learned it all so quickly.

Thanks so much for sharing that article Rory. Having seen Ferran both very early in the run and then later after it opened it was so interesting to hear about the process. You can see why Frecknall said at the preview that she was 'the bravest' person she knew. She comes across really well in that interview and she's just so excellent.

I can't believe it but I won the lottery! When I clicked on the date, it was 3rd row and the very last row in the stalls which were available - I did click the link 25mins late so there might of been seats in the Dress Circle too - for anyone wondering which seats you get!

Wow, congratulations, that’s great. I got a ‘sorry not this time…’ email sadly but good to know it does work. I’m hoping you bought the third row ones!

I just got an email with more details about the “day seats.” It’ll be interesting to find out when people start queuing up for this.
“At 5pm (evenings) and 12pm (matinees), the first 30 people to arrive outside the theatre each pick a glow stick.
They look identical but upon snapping them, only five will glow green. If you get lucky, you can swap yours at the box office for a pair of £10 front row tickets to the show.
If your glow stick doesn't light up - all is not lost. We also have an exclusive allocation of standing tickets - also priced at £10 - available to those who play the game but don't get lucky that time around. If any of those remain after those people have had an opportunity to buy, these are also available to anyone else who enquires at the box office shortly before the show.”

If they’re using those single use glow sticks that’s a hell of a lot of plastic being thrown away too. Some quick maths suggests almost 2,000 glow sticks being used for a few seconds and instantly thrown away. Doesn’t feel very responsible when something much more eco friendly could be used to give the same result?
