They should take the church for every dollar possible and donate the proceeds to The Trevor Project or similar charity.

Jesus is multi-billion dollar industry in that part of America, where the church are anti Women rights (abortions), but more than happy for the right to bare arms and are vehemently against universal free healthcare, preferring lower taxation. I rest my case. Amen!

The usual comeback over here I would imagine if I put on an amateur production of something unlicensed would be a ban from MTI/ALW etc and a hefty fine.
How on earth do you get to a full production (set building costumes etc etc) without people finding out what you're doing?

They obviously did get found out hence the cease and desist action.
If you are only selling to your family, friends and congregation you can get a very long way without doing major publicity.
Allowing that one performance is just bizarre because it seems to give a green light for other churches to go ahead and do the same 'just for one night'

So the cease and desist only was sent after the first performance on the Friday (I guess because it was live streamed and they found out). Why on earth they allowed a second performance is baffling.
I cannot imagine saying to my team tomorrow ‘right, we’re doing Hamilton, let’s crack on’ because someone would post something online and I’d be (quite rightly) grassed up!

Very strange…

I'm shocked they let them do a second performance? Especially if they were changing the lyrics!

I suspect the producers were trying to avoid a confrontation with The Church. And ended up damaging their own brand by being spineless

In this situation I think the best thing to do - both morally and from a PR stance - is absolutely to start a confrontation with this particular church.

Agreed. They’ve apparently done it before with The Greatest Show too.

Hmm, I rather suspect that the Church would enjoy the publicity generated by a confrontation. They’re clearly being provocative in order to get such a response. Reminds me of the Westborough Baptist Church, which always got an outsize amount of attention for the absolutely tiny (in comparison to most ‘Churches’) number of people involved.
Sometimes it’s wisest to avoid turning a small incident into a huge news story, even when you have the moral high ground.

I've known Really Useful/ALW to be very strict.
There was a youth production of JCS a number of years ago and they had got permission etc. One of the conditions was that they couldn't do any external advertising. A family friend of one of the cast was a local journalist and wrote a very small piece about it.
Within a few hours of publication, the rights holders were demanding an explanation for this breach of contract and threatening the withdrawal of the rights and other sanctions.
Thankfully the explanation was enough to mollify and the show went ahead.
Which makes the situation regarding this Hamilton rip off all the more perplexing.

But 'no you cannot change the lyrics of our show to suit your own agenda and also use it to be homophobic' is, or should be, a very easy line to drawn in the sand. It was going to make the news anyway - now the church gets the limelight AND Hamilton look bad for not taking a harder stance against something they could and should have stopped.

They were specific that they allowed the 6th Aug performance to go ahead after receiving a response to the cease and desist letter, which makes me wonder what the response was.
Just playing Devil’s Advocate here - it is surprising that they haven’t taken a harder-line stance so I wondering why that might be. I certainly don’t think it’s because they approved of the changes!

If I were a current or former cast member, I would be raising concerns with the producers.
It raises all sorts of flags

This did get written up in Christianity Today. Christianity Today And this shows the danger - the article suggests churches copy Door - only, wink wink with permission or license. But, Door claims to have "saved" 30 lives/souls and, to them, I'm sure that was worth it. As the pastor said - that is why they do these shows.

It is good that they have agreed to pay a fine, take down and destroy all images and videos and never to do it again
