Should I go at the end of this year or middle of next year I think people could give you better advice if you give a bit more info. It’s like me asking if I should visit Sydney in April or December. What do you want to see, achieve, accomplish?

If your intention is to catch a lot of "newer" shows, then end of November will probably be a good time. You will have revivals of 1776 and Camelot playing, and new musicals Kpop, A Beautiful Noise, Some Like it Hot and Kimberly Akimbo.

For theatre May/June is always the best time since most of the season’s biggest shows (musicals and plays) will all be playing before some start closing into mid-Summer and through the Autumn. Though of course plenty of next season’s shows haven’t been announced yet!

Meanwhile if you want to go when it's "cheap" (not that NYC is ever super cheap) I suggest January. Just be aware it will most likely be freezing cold. My friend and I have always found great deals for hotels in January and Broadway tends to be quieter then, too.

Not sure if it makes sense to reactivate this thread (happy for post to be moved).
Wondering if anyone has recommendations for October/November? Musicals or plays are both fine though not keen to visit anything I could see in London. Ideally would have options for rush/queuing or TKTS.

I highly recommend Kimberly Akimbo, ditto Purlie Victorious, which has just opened to glowing reviews.
Harmony (a musical by Barry Manilow about the Comedian Harmonists) and Buena Vista Social Club (based on the movie about Cuban musicians) haven’t yet started performances, but both sound promising (I’ve got tickets for both). Harmony got good reviews when it played off-Broadway last year, and is now transferring to Broadway with performances starting October 18. Buena Vista Social Club starts performances at the off-Broadway Atlantic Theater on November 17.
If you’d like to see Dianne Wiest onstage, she’ll be appearing in a new play called Scene Partners at the off-Broadway Vineyard Theatre starting October 26.

One word of caution about the Bedlam production of Arcadia: it’s in a theater on the second floor of a church. I have never been there (despite the fact that the church is only one block from my apartment building), and for all I know the theater may be lovely, but don’t expect anything like a Broadway theater. You may be fine with that, but I mention it just so you’ll know. I’ll be seeing the Bedlam production of Arcadia on November 11, and can report back on both the production and the theater after that, if anyone is interested.

Thank you, everyone, for these options. Some exciting new bits I didn't have on my radar as well.

I’m spending Christmas in New York but spending it in the Lower East Side for a change so a fair distance from the big venues in the vicinity of Broadway:I’m seeing So Here We Are the day after I arrive and Aubrey Plaza in Danny and the Deep Blue Sea at the Lucille Lortel Theatre the night before I come back but I will keep an eye out for an extra show that won’t break the bank (I am not spending a small fortune staying for NYE too) so might just make do with a visit to somewhere like the Comedy Cellar.

Since greenswan asked about rush/queueing tickets, I should have mentioned that tickets in the back two rows for all performances of Buena Vista Social Club go on sale for $25 on the Atlantic Theater’s website (atlantictheater.org) on November 3 at 12 noon New York time. It’s a small theater (I think only 11 rows), so the back two rows are still pretty good.

I live near Lincoln Center Theater and am looking forward to In the Gardens of Anuncia, a new musical based on the life of Graciela Daniele, who will direct and choreograph. Ms. Daniele will be played by Priscilla Lopez. www.lct.org/shows/gardens-anuncia/

I booked for Harmony - the music sounds like such a lovely throw-back to the mega musicals of the 80s and the story of the Comedian Harmonists is such an interesting one, so as a German I'm keen to see how it's told in New York.

Manahatta at the Public (in the East Village) sounds interesting. It will have opened before you get here, so you can check reviews.

I’ve added Appropriate at the Hayes Theater starring Elle Fanning, Sarah Paulson and Corey Stoll to my visit on Boxing Day: that is going to be it theatre wise.

I caught the second preview this weekend and while the musical numbers are strong, the storytelling was weak, leaving me ultimately pretty underwhelmed. The creative team was already meeting when we left the theatre, but given that this already had a run in California, I was very disappointed the book was not better. I rarely think it is a good idea for someone to direct their own show, particularly if it is based on their life, and that was confirmed here.

Sorry to hear that. I'm seeing it in early December.

I thought I would resurrect this thread rather than start a new one.
I might manage to tack a weekend in New York onto a work trip at the end of May. What are people's current recommendations?
I want to see things that won't end up coming to London.

Without knowing your tastes it's hard to recommend anything!
Quite a few of the new shows are struggling already and are likely to close in June if they can't haul in some major Tonys that will extend their lifespan. Which also (probably) means they won't come to London.
Personally I'm sorry to see that Lempicka is shaping up to be a flop, I'm a major fan of Rachel Chavkin's work (Comet, Hadestown) and it should have been the tale of a fascinating, strong and unconventional (real) woman, but apparently the book is a major mess. Still, might be one of those "rarities" you'll someday be glad to have seen.

The movement in ‘Tommy’ is something to behold. Its worth seeing just for the choreo, which is a bizarre thing to say about a rock musical.

I want to see things that won't end up coming to London. Absolutely Lempicka if it’s still running. I thought it was the best new musical I saw on my two week trip earlier this month. I’d say Suffs is unlikely to transfer and is very good. Same for The Outsiders and Great Gatsby. Hell’s Kitchen and Notebook are very good too but can see them being the mostly like to transfer.
