I think Jon was referring to trolling, not a balanced discussion. Of which we have plenty on here, never rubbing each other up the wrong way 😇 Forums are generally more civilised than comment sections and to an extent Reddit although places like Digital Spy seem to attract posters who get riled up at things.

I'm interested in the casting, but its going to take a lot for me and dr who fans to return to the series. Starting with Davies retconning the Timeless Child retcon. That was a terrible decision that went against the character of the doctor. And if you liked that story, good for you, but combined with the bad writing under Chris Chibnall the plummeting viewing ratings has showed that Dr Who is losing its audience. And if anyone makes the 'fans hated the dr becoming a woman' argument, I am sure there are people who feel that way but many were open to the casting. Me included. But Jodie Whitaker was not that convincing. Even Jo Martin proved to be a better Doctor than her. If ever, the fact that the BBC has handed over production of Doctor Who to the beloved Russel T Davies and his company 'Bad Wolf', is telling that they need this show to get back on track. Heck there were rumours that David Tennant was going to return as the 14th Doctor. Also, 'Bad Wolf' has been acquired by Sony Pictures, and if 'Spiderman No Way Home' and the 'Ghostbusters: After life' is anything to go by they are in the business of delivering stories for the fans. Bad Wolf isn't RTD's company but two of its founders, Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner were involved with Who when it was first revived back in 2005. They recently made A Discovery of Witches and His Dark Materials so they have experience in high end drama.

I hate to say this, but I've never heard of Ncuti Gatwa, never having watched Sex Education. After having been bored to tears with Jodie Whitaker and the Chibnal era, though, I'm awaiting his arrival with great anticipation.

I wasn't aware of who Ncuti was but I hadn't heard of Matt Smith apart from seeing him as 3rd lead in a play so that isn't an issue. I had no problem with Jodie as the Dr although I wasn't keen on her using her natural accent as the Dr as she seemed to sound like Jane Horrocks and that didn't seem right as the Dr's voice. Chibnal's writing of the show was more of a problem to me but as I said I'll give the new Dr a chance as RTD is returning to run it. We'll get the re-generation then the 60th anniversary in 2023 so Ncuti will have a year's plus good grace but if the show doesn't maintain the pick up it gets maybe it will be due a rest around 2025 which would be 20 years on from the reboot so a good length of run.

I knew of Matt Smith because he'd starred in a BBC drama called Party Animals and he'd been in The History Boys. The others like Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Peter Capaldi were known but not super famous. Indeed, Tennant's big pre Who role was Casanova which was written by RTD. I don't think that Jodie or Chris Chibnall will be affected by their run on Who. Indeed, I think if Jodie decides to do theatre in the next year or two, she'll sell on her name alone.

Jodie has had a nice career since she was first in Venus back in 2006 and isn't typecast in any way. As Jon said she would be a big theatre draw and it's been a decade since she was on stage. With her having her second child this year she'll likely take a break and I could see a theatre run in London if she lives near to there being of appeal to her. Also she can make a bomb doing a few Comic Cons to keep her ticking over if she takes some time out.

I wasn't keen on her using her natural accent as the Dr as she seemed to sound like Jane Horrocks That's the problem with us northerners...we all sound the same! One has a very broad Lancastrian accent, and the other comes from near Huddersfield.

It was about to be leaked - apparently impossible to keep things secret at the Beeb anymore.
The announcement was planned for later this week.

Personally I wanted another woman. It seemed like an admission of failure to give up on a female doctor so soon.
Jodie's casting wasted many opportunities for new storylines.

I think a lot depends who is available there was probably more talk about having a BAME Dr before a female Dr the likes of Richard Ayoade was widely banded about and other actresses were favoured ahead of Jodie. I would have no issue with having a female Dr again but I think going back to a male one and someone as individual as Ncuti is the right move.
Some people are saying it is tokenism having a gay black actor in the role but it was likely RTD would probably cast a gay actor as Olly Alexander was hotly tipped - but with his music commitments I never thought this could really be an option for a 3 year plus run. I'll be interested to see how Ncuti decides to play the Dr, he can clearly carry off a colourful outfit but how much he'll camp it up will be fun to see.
Also will they imply the Drs sexuality as they did with Captain Jack's character or will it just be an actor who happens to be gay playing the part. I am looking forward to seeing Ncuti as the Dr and how he will play him.
As regards Jodie's accent it is nothing against her just it created a vision of the Dr in my mind sounding like one of Jane Horrocks' wonderfully dippy characters. Christopher Eccleston played the Dr with his natural Manchester accent when a lot thought he'd play it more dark and he remains one of my favourite Drs. Michelle Gomez is Missy/Master had done the dark Mary Poppins type look which I would have loved to have seen as a Dr so Jodie couldn't go that way and taking over from the older Peter Capaldi she probably had to go quirky with her portrayal. I'd have loved to have seen Jodie's Dr with some of RTD's scripts that Eccleston and Tennant had and I'd have probably loved her in the role.

I did think they would go for a BAME Doctor after Jodie and the seeds were planted with Jo Martin's Fugitive Doctor. Richard Ayoade wouldn't have worked as the Doctor because he's not that great an actor. Everything I've seen him in is just a version of himself.

We all know the Daily Mail can be awful, but the people who spend their lives in the comments section are a whole different species, and I don't think it's fair to judge any paper, not even the Mail, by the people who spend their lives there. Granted, papers (all of them and online news sites from across the political spectrum) can be guilty of writing articles that will get the comments sections buzzing, but that's because that's what gets an article hits, and hits means advertising revenue, which is what pays for their writers. The only reason I go to the DM website is to see what their fascist writers are screaming over now or to see how wound up the comments are. Great excuse for rolling the eyes...

Christopher Eccleston played the Dr with his natural Manchester accent when a lot thought he'd play it more dark and he remains one of my favourite Drs. Never claim Eccleston is from Manchester anywhere around him. He will very quickly set you straight that he's from Salford. He can get a little salty about it at times...lol... I did have the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times, and he's charming in his own way, along with being brutally honest.

I hope they go back to writing the Doctor as not liking people dying. The body count was high over the last few series, and Jodie's Doctor was very cavalier about it!
I haven't heard of the new actor, but willing to watch and see what he's like.

I wonder if Wilfred will be back? Donna's return is more interesting than the return of Tennant's Doctor. I think they might be able to have Ncuti's Doctor meeting Donna again since technically he's not her Doctor.

I suppose it’s just a carelessly written article by someone in the PR department, but the nit-picker in me is wondering something: are they referring to his regeneration as his last ever episode? Didn’t he do the 50th Anniversary after that? I haven’t seen them since they aired.

In the Doctor's own chronology, Tennant's regeneration was, and will remain, his last ever episode. (Unless they're planning something along the lines of Tom Baker's appearance in the 50th Anniversary.)
But also yes, it's probably just a carelessly written article.

Great news DT is back and Catherine is always good value. Will they get Christopher Eccleston back I wonder. Peter Davison as DT's father in law would seem a sensible choice if they did want another Dr to guest.
Tom Baker is now 88 so would he do another cameo as he was walking with a cane last time. But if his voice is still sound he could appear in picture or as a voiceover at least.

RTD doing some great casting for the new series with the news today of the return of Bonnie Langford as Mel from her time as a companion to both the 6th and 7th Drs. I’m old enough to remember her in the show in the late 80s so to have her reprise her role is really welcomed.

That, plus Catherine Tate, and the picture of Ncuti in a very snazzy 60s suit is making me quite keen to see the next few episodes.

He was the headline guest at a con I went to just before lockdown. He was very clear that he'd never do the television series again, except perhaps, if he lives long enough to be around for the 100th anniversary (said with a cheeky grin). He was very open about the problems he had, not just with the production company (before the episodes started airing), but also with the BBC. What he had to say about BBC management at the time was so negative I'm somewhat surprised he's gone ahead and done "Dodger." He was also very, very angry with tabloid intrusion as the result of his sudden high profile in the role. Reporters badgering his parents when his father was on the downward slope of dementia, plus the Beeb not asking him before putting out media statements on his behalf which had nothing to do with the reality of situations. Compound that with what he felt was a lack of protection for his parents from the Beeb in dealing with the tabloid press siege, no intervention on their behalf. He's doing the audio adventures for Big Finish Productions, which is run by Nicholas Briggs. It's pretty much a given that the leading actors now want to do the audios - no costuming, no makeup, just a few hours of recording the script, and they're paid well. Eccleston can be blunt at times, but I appreciate his honesty. He's open about being unwilling to lie for the sake of positive PR.
