Cancelled Wednesday evening too. Wasn't notified until 6.15 when I was 200 yards away... Refunded for my £12.50 front row seat. Can't decide whether to rebook, lucky dips all gone and all I can get for the same price is a very side view on a couple of not very convenient days Livestream performances from £15 (standard single viewer) if you don't make it back, but still want to see for yourself. 19th - 23rd Jan.

All this ilnness (STREETCAR, HAKAWATIS, WATCH ON THE RHINE, now this) recalls this time last year with multiple shows toppling in the run-up to xmas, except for Tamsin Greig at the Hampstead as Peggy Ramsay -- who was indomitable ! It seems to be affecting shows in theatres which don't have understudies. Streetcar TBF was because they lost their leading lady to injury.

It's not for me to say, but the two cast members who are ill do actually have rather large problems to deal with here. We're not talking flu.

They’re having terrible luck over there, after a week of cancelled shows tonight’s performance was also cancelled after act 1 due to cast illness

Cancelled up to and including 31st. Seems to be Covid and other illnesses.
Been off since at least 20th. I feel for everyone involved, a large cast and crew and all at the YV.

That many cancelled shows will have cost them a lot more than paying for some understudies ...

Their latest announcement references despite hiring more understudies they still have such levels of illness it’s impossible for them to put the show on. Clearly the majority of the cast, crew and show team are unwell at once it seems - real shame.
I’m not all that confident it’ll be back open when I’m due to see it next week!

I'm in the cancelled camp this week and thinking I'll just wait until they look like they're solidly up and running again before I take another chance.

I’m due at the matinee on the 7th (before CFA closing performance) so hoping they’re back in action before then.

New shows like this do suffer more when cast are ill compared to long runners as there is not a long list of previous cast who can come back for a show or two. Look at Hamilton last week, they had to cancel a show but were back up soon after as previous cast returned.
Unfortunately the general public will get annoyed at constant cancellations and make future bookings less likely, especially when considering travel costs, overnight stays etc.

Theatre isn't doomed because of a couple of cancellations.

It's probably mostly just people who frequent the Young Vic.

No science to it at all but I just have a feeling that Mandela won’t be back up but I’m potentially being pessimistic as I seem to attract cancelled shows.

I was suppose to see this on Thursday and got the email about performances cancelled until New Year. Feel so bad for the cast and the good folks that work at Young Vic. The reviews were less than stellar so I don't feel too awful about missing this - and receiving a credit. It is the nature of where we are at these days - between Covid, Flu, etc....if you really want to see something - book a few dates. Happened over the summer for A Doll's House 2 and thought I would have a happy accident and saw that Theresa Rebeck play which errr was fine.

I'm having no luck with the Young Vic recently. When I came down for Oklahoma it was cancelled too. Annoying as down from Nottingham!

Will Mandela extend? With all the cancelations including the holiday week, is it possible to extend?

I wonder at what point would be cheaper just to cancel the entire run and reschedule it for a later date?

I've given up on this now, I doubt I'm the only one. It's a big enough job planning theatre trips as it is right now, with trains always on strike etc., without having shows cancelled repeatedly (twice for me) on top. Any whispers of it trying again at a later date? I wonder if the livestream will still go ahead.

How many shows have they cancelled now?! According to an article I was reading apparently 24, roughly half the run so far!

Looks like I was one of the rare people who managed to see this (a few weeks ago.) We didn't love it - the book, in particular, was very weak - but was still glad to have seen it.

Tonight we watched a concert version of the show. At least two covers on and Mandela was played, I believe, by Akmed Junior Khemalai (who normally plays Walter Sisulu), who was a bit nervous in the beginning but he grew more and more confident. Posi Morakinyo told us at the end that it was Akmed's first night as Mandela. He also said that Michael Luwoye has been going through a lot!
We saw a bit of dancing and a bit of movement, but most of the time the cast were seated and two or three actors were consulting the script every now and then. Some of the cast wore their costumes but most of them wore "Sunday clothes" and I'm not sure if these are the usual costumes they wear during the show.
We were informed about the version we were going to see by an usher a moment before the house lights were dimmed. We were told that tomorrow the box office will contact us and ask whether we want to go back to the show at another date (unless someone had come specifically for the captioned performance, in which case I believe they will be refunded). I'm leaving the UK on Monday and won't be able to be back but I hope I'll be given the chance to watch the live streaming as I'd like to see the staging.
On the whole I enjoyed the show, and I appreciated the effort of all the performers, given the peculiar circumstances. Certainly the book is not very good but I can't say the score is really memorable either. I would say that I enjoyed more the songs that were sung in an African language--although I could not understand the lyrics (and the captions did not offer a translation).
It seems that 15 or 20 people left during the interval. Also, it seemed strange to me that three of four actors rushed out of the stage after the first bows and did not stay to listen to what Posi Morakinyo had to say.
