I walked past today. What was the gallery and the restaurant looked full of industrial catering equipment and it all looked dusty. No lights on and no sound of work going on.

Glad to hear they’re back soon but the refurb does sound very suspicious. I live in the area and walk past the venue most days and there hasn’t been a sniff of work going on there. Will be interesting to see what they’ve done when they return!

5 weeks seems awfully short to announce a show that’s opening in November

Glad they are returning, but this is a very non-typical season for the Menier, and they are clearly looking to keep their production budgets as low as possible (whilst still charging £40+ a ticket). We have a new play with a (presumed) cast of 8, a one man show transferring from Off-Broadway, and another play with a cast of 4.

There is certainly no renovation work visible from the street..I pass it almost every day and haven't seen anyone going in or out for months... Then again, that's what they said about another chocolate factory and look how that turned out.

Do we think any actual works took place or just a cover?

I am disappointed that there's no sign of any musicals. Most of my past Menier visits have been for musicals, IIRC I've only ever been to one play there. None of these 3 plays announced appeal to me in the slightest.

It looks like they're doing more traditional start times with 7.30pm evening performances and 3pm matinee. I assume the restaurant is no more.

Who among us hasn't disappeared, had no one hear from us for some time, and then returned with/for a sex party?

Thanks kit66Posts moved. Discussion of Pacific Overtures over in the Musicals section please. This thread is for the Menier generally, the venue, the recent period of darkness and the new season announcements.

Didn’t see any, everywhere was stripped out, at least with the tables in the restaurant are removed there was a lot more space to stand around before the doors opened.

I understand Chocolate Factory Productions Limited have filed an 'Accelerated possession claim' against 'Persons Unknown' at the High Court.
There is a short hearing this afternoon at 4pm in Court 73 at the RCJ.

There is a short hearing this afternoon at 4pm in Court 73 at the RCJ. What does this mean? It means that the Menier is in dispute with their landlord, my guess is that the landlord wants to redevelop the entire block and the Menier isn't budging.

If the parties are in the correct order, the application would suggest it's the Menier that is trying to re-posses some of its space.

I find it strange that this case hasn't made it to any of the trades. The Stage is normally all over this sort of news.

Even though nothing announced for next production I am guessing there is something as they are advertising for a production and admin assistant.

CHRISTINA BIANCO – IN DIVINE COMPANY MAY 2023 Witness all your favourite divas on stage together, in the singular form of internationally acclaimed performer, Christina Bianco. Inspired by the divine divas of our day, Christina honours their talents as only she can – by channelling their voices through uncanny and hilarious impressions – while also illuminating the path that led her to find her own voice and brought her from New York City to London. From stage to screen, Bianco’s singular voice and comedic charm have brought audiences around the world to their feet. Part Barbra Streisand, part Bette Midler, part Tracey Ullman, Bianco’s award-winning concerts are filled with soaring vocals and celebrity impressions that the whole family can enjoy. With music spanning a wide range of styles and eras, Christina and music director Ryan MacKenzie will present dynamic arrangements of classic standards, show-tunes, and beloved pop songs. Thread for this show is here theatreboard.co.uk/thread/10577/christina-bianco-divine-chocolate-factory

If the parties are in the correct order, the application would suggest it's the Menier that is trying to re-posses some of its space. Yep, whether it's the actual theatre or another space they own remains to be seen. 'Persons unknown' claims are made against tresspassers. An interesting thing about this claim is that it's at the High Court, rather than the county court. At the risk of being very boring... Circumstances which may, in an appropriate case, justify starting a claim in the High Court are if –(1) there are complicated disputes of fact;(2) there are points of law of general importance; or(3) the claim is against trespassers and there is a substantial risk of public disturbance or of serious harm to persons or property which properly require immediate determination. Not surprised the case wasn't covered, there's something like 500 lists published every day for court hearings and it's notoriously difficult to keep an eye on what's going on.

There was also the smaller theatre there (think it was called The Bunker) underneath but run independently and not by the Menier.
