A theatrical quiz. What uniquely links each of the following pairs ? Each of the six links is different but there's an additional overall link between all six questions - if you find that the individual answers will be much easier to find.
Work together as a team and feel free to use Google or any other method - howe'er you come to know it, answer me.
1) Simon Russell Beale and Siegfried and Roy (the Las Vegas magicians)
2) Ian McKellen and Nicol Williamson
3) Hugh Hefner and Keith Chegwin
4) Michelle Terry and Vivien Leigh (and Violet Vanbrugh actually)
5) Alan Cummings and Stephen Dillane
6) James Bolam and David Tennant

3 - Chegwin played Fleance in the 1971 Polanski version of Macbeth which Hefner executive-produced
I imagine the link could well be the Scottish play
I can see the link in 6 but will let others chip in...

altamont and couldileaveyou, both correct.
And correct the overall link is Macbeth - source of the quote "Howe'er you come to know it, answer me"
(1), (2), (6) are left.
Hugh Hefner funded the 1971 Macbeth film directed by Roman Polanski and improbably featuring Keith Chegwin. Possibly as a consequence of the source of funding it features a nude scene with Francesca Annis as Lady M. It is notable for its focus on the scenes of violence - uneasily for the viewer we know that only two years before Polanski's wife Sharon Tate had been murdered by Charles Manson.

6 - both James Bolam and David Tennant have played the porter in Macbeth - Bolam in the BBC Nicol Williamson version and Tennant in an audio version
(I see that the First Messenger in the BBC version was played by Gorden Kaye - aka René in 'Allo 'Allo)
1 - John Napier designed both the McKellen Macbeth for the RSC and also the Siegfried and Roy show at the Mirage in Las Vegas

You are hovering vaguely around an answer with your comment on (1) but of course it asks about Simon Russell-Beale's connection to Siegfried and Roy, not McKellen's.

Did Napier design the SRB Macbeth at the Almeida in 2005? If not, I'm stumped
Regarding 2- they have both played Macbeth for the RSC, directed by Trevor Nunn

That's all the answers dealt with. Trevor Nunn directed Nicol Williamson in a main stage RSC production with Helen Mirren as Lady M. It was quite well received and transferred to London. But Nunn was unhappy with it and almost immediately went straight into rehearsals with an entirely different company for an entirely separate small-scale production of it - that turned out to be the famous McKellen/Dench one. Nicol Williamson also played it in a separate BBC production unrelated to the RSC one. I don't think anyone else has ever directed two separate consecutive productions of the same play. Plenty of directors have directed the same Shakespeare multiple times over their whole career. Bill Alexander has directed Merchant of Venice five times and Jonathan Miller directed King Lear seven times.

Thought I had got one at first. My first Jan question answered.... but I'm only two weeks late
