Upon news of his passing my Uncle in Australia wrote the following poem that i'd like to share with you all:
Together, we ventured into the woods
Where terrible giants dwelt in the sky
And a brazen young girl in a scarlet hood
Met a hungry wolf, who was up to no good
As a witch sought ingredients impossible to buy.
You shared a story, set on the upper West Side
Of two young lovers, neither one to blame
Of tragedy and prejudice, ignorance and pride
Of secret desires on opposing sides
Of an anger not even love could tame.
We walked together through London streets
Along lanes of filth and grime
Passing taverns; serving pies of questionable meats
Wary of strangers and those who would greet
A barber, the protagonist of a terrible crime.
Your wit and flair has filled our minds
and challenged our hearts to grow
Images and music of various kinds
Messages and humour that sought to bind
Encompassed in a theatre, on a stage, within a show.

The BBC Proms 2010 Sondheim 80th Birthday Celebration concert will be shown on BBC Four on 27 December.
Featuring songs from A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and many more, performed by Simon Russell Beale, Dame Judi Dench, Daniel Evans, Maria Friedman, Caroline O’Connor, Julian Ovenden, Jenna Russell and Bryn Terfel.

Featuring songs from A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and many more, performed by Simon Russell Beale, Dame Judi Dench, Daniel Evans, Maria Friedman, Caroline O’Connor, Julian Ovenden, Jenna Russell and Bryn Terfel. I was at that Prom and it was one of the best nights ever. Will be lovely to see it again. But poor Mr Sondheim tripped and nearly fell as he was coming on the stage to take his bow. |

Lin Manuel got choked up reading Stephen Sondheim’s words. Words are important and was my hook into musical theatre. Music just elevates great Words. Words are what Stephen Sondheim was an absolute Grandmaster of. His words will immortalise him.

Just watched on i-Player the Stephen Sondheim Omnibus about The Nation staging the original production of Sunday in the Park with George. (Simply) brilliant! Watch the rest of the evening as well. It makes for a facinating night of TV. Also the Cam Mac documentary on Sky Arts last night as lots of Sondheim in it as well as the man himself talking. At the end they said that the interview took place 10 days before he died. I watched my last of the programmes this morning (Face to Face, which I really liked). Also really enjoyed the Omnibus documentary, it was fun spotting young Di Botcher, Clare Burt and Geraldine Fitzgerald. Does anybody happen to know if anything became of the work of the students he was teaching? I wondered if somebody might recognise them. The ‘Sondheim at the BBC’ compilation was good too, if a little over-reliant on West Side Story numbers. |
