Now that Back to the Future and Frozen dominated the musicals wins at the WhatsOnStage Awards, is either of them going to be nominated and win the Olivier or will we see an upset - ALW’s Cinderella?
The Best New Musical line-up of WOS and the Oliviers are pretty much consistent and matched across the nominated productions.

Considering that not a single great musical opened this season the only thing we can be sure of is that the winner will be average at best. I guess it depends if they want to go for the lavish Broadway import (Moulin Rouge), the local product (Cinderella), fuel a possible Broadway transfer (Back to the Future) or celebrate family entertainment (Frozen). I'm not even considering Prince of Egypt or Pretty Woman because, well, the state of the world is dire enough as it is. The Bob Marley musical and the thing at the Garrick opened without making a single wave so I'd be surprise to see them pick up any award, except maybe Kane

That said, as much as I loved Cabaret and the immersive aspect, subject matter and two leads, my heart belongs to Moulin Rouge I thought MR was fabulous. I left the show uplifted, smiling (in these difficult times) and humming all the songs For me, IMHO, that's what a musical's all about :-)

I thought the Almeida was ineligible ?

I thought the Almeida was ineligible ? Almeida is a member of SOLT (Society of London Theatre) as an Affiliate, given their venue is small. They opt to pay the Performance Levy so they are eligible for the top awards (same with Donmar, Hampstead, Young Vic). The theatre has been a nominee for many years and productions already.

the doctor was nominated in 2020 for best new play - so can't see spring awakening not being put forwards!

How do people think Cabaret and Anything Goes will perform on Tuesday for nominations?

How do people think Cabaret and Anything Goes will perform on Tuesday for nominations? Pretty well I’d assume, as I hope Spring Awakening will. Some very strong musical revivals for sure.

I wonder how Anything Goes will compensate for the absence of Sutton Foster? If they'll do a number without Reno Sweeney, if they can get Rachel York or if they'll use Kerry Ellis and use it to advertise the tour.

They might do Carly MD's number with all the boys - shows off the choreo and doesn't need them to ship over/ use a Reno.

I remember in 2011 at the Oliviers, they did a Legally Blonde number with the new Elle (Susan McFadden) who was unknown to most people, and Sheridan Smith was sitting in the audience waiting to accept her best actress award for the same show. It was utterly bizarre, but that's what they did. I don't think we'll get an AG number. Did they do a King and I number in 2018 (19?) when Kelli O'Hara had left and wasn't at the awards show?

Well Cinderella well and truly snubbed. Big nominees are Cabaret, Anything Goes, Life of Pi. Surprised Samantha Barks not nominated but thrilled Steph McKeown has been.

Well, this is interesting, overall pretty happy (and very pleased Charles Edwards got a nomination). Surprised Spring Awakening and Carousel didn't do a bit better and very surprised Robert Lindsay is in best actor (would have thought he'd be certain to win the supporting category). They really didn't like Cinderella though did they...

Yes, Carousel not getting a look in is a pretty big snub, but perhaps not surprising given that the concept for that revival was pretty polarising. It's a disgrace that Tom Deering's new orchestrations weren't nominated in the orchestrations/score category (which is always a bit of a mess anyway).

So…
Saoirse was snubbed, so were CHF, David Harewood, James McArdle…even Macbeth underperformed! I was actually thinking that they’ll win Best Revival. Best of Enemies also underperformed. So thrilled for Charles Edwards!! But that also means he’s up against Ben Daniels who I love and who I think is the frontrunner for Best Actor.
When it comes to the subsidised theatres, they only like the National this year.
