I think on the whole this is a very strong album and this could easily be the finest cast recording of the show. The orchestra and sound design are impeccable, I'd swear there are words and lyrics I never even heard before listening to this, especially in the choral moments.
There are some fantastic supporting performances from Annie Golden, David Patrick Kelly, Julia Lester and Cole Thompson, whose "Giants in the Sky" is probably the highlight of the whole album. Patina Miller is humourless and vocally weird: I like her Stay With Me but her Last Midnight was a bit odd. Mind you, it's a song that works only on stage, but the last note was still weak and odd, it's unclear whether she was dying, disappearing or simply having a breakdown. Sara Bareilles sings beautifully and my only quibble is that at times her acting is a bit too Saturday Night Live style. Gavin is great as the Prince but a bit bland as the Wolf. The transition between the two halves of "Any Moment" is slightly awkward and some of the tempi are surprisingly fast.
Still, despite some quibbles, I really enjoyed this, and the first act in particular is pretty much perfect.

Interesting you say some of the tempi are fast because to me parts felt slow. The Prologue for example, here, like you I felt I was picking up previously unheard words/details, but the only perceivable reason for this was it felt a good notch slower than I'm used to. Like they had to slow it down so the locals could get everything that was happening.

I listened all the way through today. It's disappointing. It feels flat to me.
I know they have some known names on this recording, but i'm not sure why they recorded it at all.

Oh I thought it was a gorgeous recording! The original recording sounds like it was done in a tunnel. I was lucky enough to see this cast on Broadway back in July and I’m so glad that they’ve done this recording.

Anyone else feel like the conductor hit a massive bong before the recording though? Prologue especially feels a few bpm slower than what Id be used to.

Having listened through the album, I'm so glad I saw Stephanie instead of Sara. Sara's voice just doesn't fit. It's pretty, but it's folky or poppy, and way more fuzzy and breathy than I like in musical theatre. The rest I loved, though. Always good to have a new recording of some damn good music.

Granted I only listened to it on my work laptop, but it seemed to be missing something. Maybe some of the little orchestral flourishes that are on other recordings? Patina Miller's Witch made some odd choices too... I will for sure give it a proper listen to over the weekend, and on a decent sound system. Why is it Patina Miller on the recording and not Heather Headley, who she replaced?
EDIT - I just answered my own question. I wasn't aware it was being billed as the 2022nBroadway cast recording, I thought it was from Encores, which if i'm honest, I thought was pretty much the same cast.

Whatever one thinks of Sara's voice (I think it is fine here if a bit pop), she is the reason the show was earning a few hundred thousand dollars more in ticket sales when she was in the cast and a major part of why the show transferred for A Broadway run.

Not wanting to be as dull as the steward shouldn't the chat about the Broadway cast recording be in the International section?

Not wanting to be as dull as the steward shouldn't the chat about the Broadway cast recording be in the International section? You're quite right. The moderation of the Board has gone right down recently. Now moved.

I've not had chance to listen to the recording yet, but I was curious to see that 'Our Little World' isn't included, is it included in the production? Or is it omitted from both? (Having not seen it)

I think song is marked optional in the script. Sondheim in the Hat books is very ambivalent about it.
I love the song.
Encores used to do the original script of a production this is no longer the case but if they stuck to thay rule then World wouldn't be performed.
