Couldn't find a thread for the Tokyo Olympics so here it is!
Anyone watching the opening ceremony? What sports are you looking forward to?
I'm very much looking forward to the Gymnastics, Diving, Cycling and the Athletics. Love watching the Heptathalon and I'm going to be really rooting for the British gymnasts - they have a great team.

I like watching a bit of everything. Being a tennis fan, I do enjoy watching Olympic tennis as it's a different setting to usual because they're representing their country. I also enjoy the swimming, diving and cycling.

All the equestrianism & the men's road cycling are my priorities for watching.

I absolutely love the Olympics and was supposed to be in Tokyo as a spectator last year. Although it will be slightly different without an audience I'm still excited to see almost everything. My top sport is women's gymnastics and I'll be rooting for Russia who are looking beautiful.

I watch most things though less so the combat sports and most of the team sports like football, handball, Rugby 7s etc.
Main sports, athletics, tennis, swimming, diving, rowing, gymnastics, cycling.
Obviously going to be an odd year, particularly without any crowds but still looking forward to watching.
Be interesting to see how Europsport's coverage compares to the BBC since they have the primary rights and more channels available I believe.

My absolute top is artistic gymnastics, I will also follow the athletics and tennis (sadly I don’t think Andy is up to the three-peat) fervently and hopefully I will manage to see some of the swimming and diving.

Gymnastics, athletics, cycling, tennis and rowing for me, and possibly some of the swimming.
The time difference means I'll be working when most of it is live so I'll just be skipping through on catch up.

I got a Eurosport subscription for the first time last autumn so I'm wondering which would be best to watch. It would be useful if both companies announced their commentators for each sport in advance.

Rhythmic Gymnastics for me. Unfortunately the BBC tends not to cover it much because it's a sport we rarely do well in. For many years they managed to avoid covering it at all when it was literally the only event happening, preferring to show reruns of earlier events instead.

I don't know all the specifics on every platform but I believe BBC will only have 2 live streams while Eurosport has many more. On Sky or Virgin Media there are seven new Eurosport channels that have popped up.

I will be watching as much as possible. In London 2012 even found myself watch the equestrian.
However Japan have done an appalling bad job of organising this, not sure if this games will complete.

Thanks. Good to see the cycling line-up doesn't include that annoying Australian woman who has done the last couple of world championships. Also interesting to see that Rob Hatch, usually a cycling commentator, is also down for canoeing. I wouldn't have thought the two sports had much in common!

I like the sailing, but it's usually on on the red button at 3.17 am!
I was surprised how few athletes we had in the parade. Are some still quarantining?

I think they are just being cautious given the circumstances.
Most of the teams seemed to be lower than usual though ours did seem to be on the smaller size.

It seems they did keep the numbers down deliberately, but I'm not sure how they decided. Even in normal years a lot of athletes won't go because it's a lot of hanging around when they should be resting up, though it sounds as if a lot of athletes left out the back door after the grand entrance. I was underwhelmed by the opening ceremony itself, but I liked that the rings were made from trees planted the last time they hosted, and the interpretation of the sporting graphics. The speeches were far too long and they need to speed up getting the flag up the flag pole. I was judging how each country handled the joint carrying of the flag. Some handled it better than others. I only heard that there was to be one woman and one man from each country recently, and wonder if it was only announced to the countries recently so they didn't have a chance to practice. Too often there was a tall man holding the bottom of the flag pole, while his shorter countrywoman tried to reach uncomfortably to get a hand on it.

I recorded the opening ceremony and fast forwarded most of it. I knew it wasn't going to be a big spectacle but I thought it was a bit dull. Speeches far too long. Liked the globe thingie in the sky and also the Olympic flame. Slightly spoilt by a man wondering around at the base of the flame who obviously shouldn't have been within view of the camera. Due to time difference I will probably just watch the edited highlights programme each evening. My favourites will be Gymnastics, Swimming, diving and some athletics.

Understand entirely why they scaled back and were more austere. But it was dull. You have to feel sorry for everyone involved. Athletes are fighting to get into form. Volunteers are left with no visitors to look after. Organisers are left with no income and huge additional logistics. The games still needed to be held. But I do understand the cries from those saying they should have been cancelled. Having said that, the paralympics have yo go ahead. They are the true heroes of sport in my eyes. They deserve their moments in the spotlight

Men’s roads race cycling - go G Men’s tennis - really want Djokovic to get a golden slam Women’s gymnastics - any event with Simone Biles Given Thomas, Geoghan Hart & Yates (S.) all crashed during the Tour de France, I can't help wondering if going for Yates (A.) as team leader might be the best bet. Still think it'll be Slovenia or Belgium though.
Ditto. He's got to be in with a pretty good shot.
In previous games I've watched the women's gymnastics but I'm probably not going to bother this time because Biles is clearly going to win everything.

And deservedly so, she's exceptional and well worth watching! It doesn't exactly make for a suspenseful competition though. Also, and this will probably be an unpopular opinion, I grew up watching gymnastics in the 90s where the competitors were all very small & thin. Now they are much more muscular & curvy and, while doubtless better for their health, I don't find watching gymnastics as aesthetically pleasing as I used to.

Now they are much more muscular & curvy and, while doubtless better for their health, I don't find watching gymnastics as aesthetically pleasing as I used to. That's why I've grown to prefer rhythmic gymnastics over artistic. It dawned on me that with the exception of the asymmetric bars artistic gymnastics was mostly about brief flurries of movement separated by long pauses of preparation, and it seems to have become more so in recent years. RSG is about continuous movement; the gymnasts aren't allowed to pause. Also, with RSG the gymnasts work with the apparatus rather than on it so they don't suffer the same issues of growing out of the sport if they get too tall.
